My MM is on its way back to NJ for another calibration attempt on my 50 Summilux. A few days before I sent it in, I was in the shower thinking about using this camera for another shoot. More specifically, tethered...or at least some way of letting the art director inspect, and for me to check focus without relying on the not-so-stellar lcd. I remembered that I had a very un-used 8mb eye-fi pro x2 card. I bust out of the shower and immediately began researching and excitedly telling my uninterested GF about my plan to check focus on my iPhone. She was like, "Uh...why wouldn't you just use your ipad then?"
Genius! 😛 Sure enough, there is a eye-fi ipad app. I knew I read somewhere that eye-fi does not work in a full metal M body, but I had to see for myself. It was a bit tricky to set up, you have to forget all wireless networks, and set the card to direct mode but it works great. I have the card beam jpegs and leave the raw files alone. I'm not too sure about the range, but it was definitely working fine around my kitchen. My friend was making crepes and I shot his whole crepe-making procedure and all the jpegs made it to my iPad 3. So much easier to check focus!
This of course is not something I would ever use for everyday shooting, but it is nice to know I have the option in the bag. I am pretty pleased with finding another use for my ipad besides watching netflix in bed.
