There was a local CL ad here for a clean M4 + 50mm Leica lens for $400.. student needing rent money. I think he could have walked into a camera store and would be offered more?

Sounded a little fishy. Those ads are almost always for Leica gear.

The picture is stolen.
I'm convinced there is no camera for sale.
The person is simply looking for a sucker to buy his story and send money.

Since posting this thread I have spent some time reading about CL frauds and scams.
In some item categories the percentage of fraudulent sales is ridiculously high. (Yes Cameras)
Others such as Bikes have many, many stolen items.
To be honest, I can't understand how CL has not been shut down for lack of improvements.
What has been and could be a cool place of community exchange needs serious re-tooling in order to continue.
It's a shame really that we don't have space for honesty in the world we live in.
Without changing It really seems like CL is complicit in these frauds.... providing an easy platform for criminals.

I emailed the original CL ad when it first posted. I asked where they'd like to meet and do a transaction, very politely and to the point.

Crickets.

I emailed again and suggested a place to meet. Crickets.

Interesting that you received a reply.

I harbor particular hatred for these kinds of scammers.

Well, at least the three linked by Andy and taomei have been blocked and shown as flagged for removal.

Tons of similar scam postings on NYC CL. If you send an email, do so through CL's email link--IIRC it gets routed through CL and don't disclose your real email address. I've learned to NOT include my email, cell #, address or last name until I've confirmed the other side is genuine; scammers/spammers are looking to collect info to spam as well. There are occasional bargains, but usually those are snapped up quickly.
