M10 - film camera wishlist

I hope Leica hasn't halted development work for a future M film camera. And I don't see why the introduction of digital should have them & their ilk own the rest of the M series numbering. New is new no matter if digital or film. So for the new M film camera is there something anybody wanted to add or validate a wishlist? Mine is as follows:

1. Higher shutter speeds say up to 3 stops say 1/8000s. The Nikon F6 does this! Who doesn't like to shoot Leica lenses wide open and not having to revert to an ND filter or slower film for a one-off?
2. Self-timer.
3. TTL/AE/flash TTL with higher sync speeds say 1/250s or better.
4. Single viewfinder lines.
5. VF mag choice of 0.58, 0.72, 0.85 and 1.00 all on the same camera
6. Even better - a mechanical M with all the above features!

I'm sure this would excite all those film M camera who bought 2nd hand to consider buying a new Leica.

pretty sure the speeds can't go that high cause of the shutter curtain.

1.. Hybrid / Electronic Global Shutter : completely quiet and 1/8000s à la GXR ( okay the GXR is progressive - but given time )
2.. Some attempt at water and dust sealing
3.. Projected frames lines / EVF à la X100 but still with optical RF
4.. Faux wind on - for support
5.. Self timer / Intervalometer / IR release /WiFi ipod connect
6.. M5 3 lug strapping
7.. More dynamic range
8.. Less $$$$

yee -- that's a pretty tall order!

I think it's unlikely that Leica will come out with any 'improved' film body anytime in the future ... I don't have any info to back this assumption up, but it's just an educated guess.

Apart from the ongoing (small but feverish) interest in the MP and M7, the film body part of the Leica product mix is very small. They're really focusing on digital for the future survival of the brand.

If anyone might come out with some sort of 'Super M10', it will probably be (get ready for it...) Cosina.

Now, I will sit here in my kitchen and wait for the inevitable bolts of lighting to strike me down. 🙂

My eyes just saw the M10 and ... silly me 😱

Film camera wise I've never felt that anything about the M6 classic needed changing.

Hmm. While we dream, how about a smaller film RF camera, in the league of Barnack Leica size? IIIg with modern construction, with or without integrated RF/VF (I personally don't mind separated windows), M-mount, and speed film loader. Fully mechanical without lightmeter would be extra great. Oh and black paint option as well as real chrome option.

Leica IV?

I'd buy it under $5000 mark. 😀

Or maybe try to out-do the Zeiss Ikon ZM.

I think the ZM is a great camera, but it could be improved on a bit. Maybe some of the improvements that the OP suggested.

I'm pretty happy with my Zeiss ZM. Probably 1/4000 instead of 1/2000 would be nice and single framelines would be nice too.

If they made a small mirrorless camera with 1/4000 (faster than Bessas), with a new shutter of course (maybe just a bit noisier), that would make a difference from their WWII top shutter speed...

I think that MP is the greatest film camera and we dont need other...Hope that Leica will produce MP for many years. I dont like electronic and automatization in camera...I am fotographer not my camera...I want to lead my camera to make great pictures not allowed camera to lead me... What about an M camera that has the ability to shoot film and has a user installed full frame digital back as an optional extra... Much like the R8/9???

That would be cool but Leica would never do it.

I used to think that the M7 and MP were the end of the line for Leica film cameras. But, watching the market, I believe that if they slapped an M10 (for example) logo on the front of an M7, and made a minor change or two, they could still sell a lot of them to collectors and folks who have never used Leica RF's before but only want the very best. Price them at $7,000 each.

The changes wouldn't have to be great. Perhaps frame line changes and at most a little faster shutter speed.

1. Get rid of that sissy film advance lever and replace with knurled knob.
2. Eliminate light meter. All Leica owners possess mystical powers to know shutter and aperture settings.
3. Get rid of 28, 35, 75, 90, 135 framelines.
4. Separate viewfinder and rangefinder windows.

Or if they don't do this, you could buy a used LTM.

WIth the numbering having made the jump from the film line to the digital line, I'd be confident the M10, whenever that comes about, would be digital. And I would be willing to bet that Leica regards the MP as the apotheosis of the sort of film cameras they want to build.

I did enjoy the idea of the B&W digital bandied about a while back: no LCD, B&W sensor only. An interesting concept that, pretty obviously, would have few buyers.
