^ this is awesome, I have never used continuous, self timer or video feature on my m240.

Yep, I stand corrected. Maybe just the video feature has been removed. But I do understand the advantage of LV when using wide angles and those with challenging vision issues.

Panasonic makes some of the electronics for the M10 and they know video. It would be an unforgivable omission for Leica to leave out Panasonic's amazing video. I would doubt they would do that?

Video is best left to µ43 where the combination three image stabilization technologies play well: in body multi axis sensor shift ; electronic pixel shifting and in lens shift.

I think if Leica continues to go backwards in time..charging a mint for stripped down cameras..its going to catch up with them sooner than they think..
If they are going to provide featureless cameras..then they need to lower their prices on those models..
and have another upscale line with video etc..as most people are going to want this as an option sooner or later..and good 4K video too..not some afterthought..and in an M too..not just the SL...
This M10 is a nonstarter for me most likely..not going to pay that kind of change for a once in awhile non video cam..just for stills..

@FrozenInTime, all of those things can be taken care of with a decent video tripod. And, 4/3 is not really a match to FF sensor and Leica glass. But, I do get what you are saying and Panasonic makes a new camera that does a great job with video. Leica should use those strengths from Panasonic and make better video than what they did with the M240 which could make decent video, for a first try from Leica.
Just the essentials! Note the typ 262 models don't have video either. Maybe Leica is reserving video for their non-M cameras and withdrawing that feature from the M line?

Or perhaps you are just not the type of user that buys a Leica? Honestly, Leica is doing exactly what it should do with these cameras. They have a SL as their modern, forward thinking camera. The M should not be turned into a "me too" camera or it'll lose everything that makes it special.

I think it is typical of high end, niche products, that less is often more. Leica has no need with the digital M series to even care at all what other manufacturers are up to, with the exception, perhaps, of sensors and processors.

Strongly agreed. It's a completely unique product and one that sells well within its boundaries. Its entire niche is that it's the simplification of photography. It's one of a kind. Definitely doesn't need to keep up with gimmicks.

Video capability hardly needs to make the product (appearance and user interface) complicated. It's certainly a nice to have feature on a digital camera, and one that many users can put to good use.

I'm not attacking you, I genuinely would like to know.
I'm not sure that sensor improvements are really that big beyond the bigger MB count, often pointless beyond certain point for the vast majority of users.
Personally I would like to see sensors with better aesthetics as a lot of what we never liked about digital is still there, the files I've seen from the new Canon 5d mark iv look pretty much identical to the files from my mark iii, which is to say ok, but still with that meh colour palette, mucky mids and a propensity to exaggerate magenta.
Iso is pretty good across the board now, as is the MB count, so what is it you would like to see?

This is what I'm thinking will happen as well. They'll reserve the SL as their "do it all" camera and keep the M line as a "heritage" camera.

I think what he means is pushing the boundaries or being on the leading edge of sensor tech rather than always being on the lower end of the top 25 or 50. I hate to keep bringing them up but Sony is killing it. That BSI sensor in their RX1RII and A7RII is amazing. I wouldn't want 42mp but having that kind of sensor tech in a 24mp variant with Leica's own color palette would be great.

No - but those were intended for a very small customer segment and piggybacked on existing cameras technically. Sales can be counted in thousands rather than tens of thousands, not enough for a main model.

The issue raised by Emile de Leon involves demographics.
Will the number photographers purchasing new still-cameras and lenses who value (a.k.a 'vote with their wallet') the Leica M aesthetic grow, remain constant or shrink over the next two decades?
Anyone who reads about the M digital photography experience on RFF understands, today's photographers who purchase new digital M cameras truly value the M photography experience.
What will future still photographers – who grew up interacting with devices by touching, swiping and voice-control – accept as value-added attributes?
What level of market share critical mass is required to keep the M aesthetic alive?
It is true retro technologies enjoy resurrections. For instance, analog audio electronics and turntables is a viable niche market where people will pay a large price premium for uniqueness and quality. Here's just one example of a company expanding into the analog audio market with more products in development.
Future imaging technologies could make the M bodies physical restrictions moot. This would reduce the engineering R&D investment and manufacturing costs required to accommodate the M mount lens registration. Since Cosina can manufacture a competent analog rangefinder mechanism, others can too.
Somehow the M aesthetic will survive.
