It's part of the design brief.
And why brass Leicas feel much more solid than cameras like my puny Fuji TX-2 which are made out of titanium.

Yeah yeah...I know...I forgot...its got to brass up aftter a few months..that way it will look just like Robert Franks or HCB's...lol..
I like that titanium idea though..a lot! But they would have to retool...as titanium would defeat more drill bits etc..and that would cost..more $$ for Leica..and we cant have that now can we.....:bang:

The only way video on an M would even "start" to make sense is if you have lenses with a large depth field. That's pretty much the opposite of all of my lenses. Also, the moving aspect of video is hard to accomodate with the focusing mechanism on an M. So for me, video in the first place was "just a marketing gimmick."

I have such lenses, as they have an aperture ring...🙄
And yes, focus pulling is an acquired trick.

Actually...if you haven't shot video with a noct f1 ..well..it is one of the most beautiful things ever at wide open or close..just mouth watering..
I would luv to have that feature on a current smaller M..not for pro video setups..but for personal and some moneymaking too when needed..
..with the noct..you get that beautiful cinema look..nothing else compares...and I could argue that...it even works better on video...than on stills..
You could use the viewfinder just fine I would imagine..and the LCD..if you needed that..in that nice small package..

I am not impressed. Software issue on the camera is making it not usable. Leica has confirmed a new firmware update next week to address some issues but still this is unacceptable.

This was a very large purchase for me. These issues should have been sorted before release.

I've shot a couple thousand frames this week - it's been usable for my work. What software errors are showing up on your M10?

I get this one. Leica told me the newer firmware shipped with the second batch. First batch has the older firmware.

The black one is chrome. Only black paint cameras show nice brassing 🙂

Mine has the later software version 1.0.2, It still has a problem reading a 128gb sdhx card, which it's supposed to support.
I'm stuck with my 64 for now...

I guess you do not know the difference between black chrome and black paint.

If you keep the camera for very long and really use it alot, you will find out the difference. 😉

Sadly you are misinformed, on all accounts.
The top and bottom plate are indeed brass, and the finish is a new powdery black type which Leica calls "black chrome", even though it isn't.

Prior to receiving mine last week, I actually saw a model, which was explained to me by the rep.

Of course the top plate is brass. That has nothing to do with the difference between black chrome and black paint. It never has, in this context.

Naturally, the rep is not going to let this appear to be "an issue". He may not even know the difference.

The black paint M9 wears directly to brass:

Your Black M10 will never wear like that. Instead if used to this degree, a silvery nickel finish will appear. Almost none make it to the brass.

It is a known problem, also with Leica, that some cards malfunction on the M10. Fortunately most don't, so a card switch is the present workaround.

Having said that, it is always wise to use a new card with a new camera, or, if you are taking a card that has been used in another camera (even one of the same brand), to run the card through SD Formatter (free software by the association of SD card manufacturers) and format afterwards in the camera.
A card that has been used in another camera before is bound to cause problems sooner or later.

I tried 8 different cards. SDHC, SDXC, 8gb, 16bg, 32gb, 64gb (all sandisk) formated most in camera and one i tried with that program someone suggested. It works for a while but eventually goes back to that setting. It has nothing to do with the card. because I can take the card out reformat another card then put back int he one that wasnt working and it will start working. The leica tech I spoke with said that the new firmware is rolling out next week that addresses a few issues but he could not guarantee that the SD card issue would be in this fix.

Well, in that case I think Leica should replace the camera, as others only report the occasional problem with one or two cards. This one is definitely not functioning properly.

My 128gb sdhx wouldn't even format in my M10, but did so instantly in my SL, so I've swapped the cards. This card is also supposed to be currently supported.

We shall see what happens with the new firmware, but I suspect it will be 1.0.2, which I currently have installed.
What you're experiencing doesn't add up to a single card issue.

Playing with my useless relic M100 (M240 100 yr anni edition dontchaknow), useless now the M10 is here..

I think I may pick up a spare barely used M240 from all those being unloaded by those keeping up with the Joneses..

That's a lovely shot Huss!

It's funny, I never got along with my M240, same as my film MP, for some reason I never connected with them?!
I swapped my M240 with a friend in London for an SL, last November.
It's big, but I really liked the output and use it mostly with my R lenses.
I picked up an M10 just over a week ago, like the files, a lot like the SL. Everyone says it's better, if it is, it's marginal. The SL files are brilliant!

Those two and my Monochrom M246, are the stable. I may upgrade to the new Monochrom, just for size only, the files are brilliant, the M10 conversions, while great, are not up to the same level.

I think you're right about the pricing, always a good time for entry when everyone's running out the door.
The actual difference the image quality between the M240/SL/M10, is maybe +5/10%. The big bonus is the high ISO, size and speed. 😉
