M10 images leak

I contacted the Leica Store in Geneva, Switzerland and they told me that they don't have a confirmed delivery date from Leica Germany and also that they have received very many pre-orders for the M10. In Switzerland, it sells for Swiss Francs 7,150.
Wow, with large pre orders like that; what is that saying for future value holding on previous models. For the working pro it will not matter; but the collector may be in for a eye opener. In the last few days I see more M240's up for sale in Canada already.

I just saw a video of someone using the m10 on Vimeo..it looks way better than any other M digital in size to my eye..now..if they can just make it a tad less tall...and bring the height down to m6 size..instead of m7 height..
I think I'll wait for that model...;)

It's more complicated than that. Read for example

http://www.jazzsemi.com/cmos-image-sensor.html

TowerJazz provides a sensor platform, where a customer (like Leica) can not only pick cover layers, micro lens architectures, etc., but even modify the underlying sensor/pixel architecture, for example by specifying target base ISO or DR. Why does Leica not tell you what they did ? Because it's IP. And patenting is only one way to protect it (not always the smartest due to necessary publication).

Roland.

You may have found their source :) Yes, I agree they are making careful choices, as they have from the beginning. Their careful choice with the M9 means at base ISO it is completely competitive today, and still preferred by some. Their choice of the high performance S8612 coverglass meant great performance but eventual corrosion for some cameras. You can bet that choice has changed. :)

As to hiding the changes to protect the IP, it's a bit rich. The new choices could be easily described without specifics. IE We have a new IR coverglass which has just become available and results in.....etc.

More likely there is nothing brand new, though the mix could be different, and maybe there was room for better ISO than SL in one of those choices, as you suggest. Or Puts idea that the alogrithuim is improved accounting for the ISO improvement over SL is completely plausible. Software is advancing as fast or faster than hardware, as is implementation, hopefully. Certainly a significant part of the new look of the files is camera software.

Anyway: The ISO performance and the totally new look of the OOC files mean that in practical terms it IS a new sensor, for sure. That is huge and beyond my own expectation. Full credit to Leica.

The details of how these improvements came about are murky, and not many people really know. Puts is certainly not proven wrong. "Leica says..." this is meaningless.

The M10 does.....is what matters, we can all agree, even Puts ;)

and the M10 appears to DO very well....best yet for M. :)

that is plenty sweet for me. No additional sugarcoat or reverence required, if fact it's a distraction.

Thanks for the link.

I need 14 days for a good evaluation of an M10 as I am working fulltime, and I travel to conferences too, so I cannot guarantee that I will have time for such an evaluation if I am on a waiting list, and the camera has to be sent by airmail somehow and within the rental period.

Rental Period Rental Price Price Per Day (Approx.)
3 days $251.00 $83.67
4 days $269.00 $67.25
7 days $358.00 $51.14
10 days $483.00 $48.30
14 days $627.00 $44.79

These cost figures are without any coverage at all for the M10.

Why not just rent it for 1 to 3 days if possible..you will know if you like it immediately or not..in the 1st 5 min or so..I know I would..
A couple of things I don't like about it though..just in the back of my mind..for days now..
1. Basically just as heavy as the m240...why didn't they make it lighter..? Whats with all the brass..
2. Dumb iso dial...on the left side....I'll need two hands to operate it..or at least my left clumsily..why did they do this..? All I can think is..until they come out with the MD in the smaller body..and put the iso dial on the back so you cam move it more quickly with your right thumb..I wont like this left side iso dial at all..an annoyance at best..
3. Worse battery life...
4. No usb port..why?
That's the physical issues..but as to the internals..why wifi on this basic camera...I think its a good in general idea though..but on this cam..kills the "purity" of it...the "1960 theme"
I'll probably end up buying an m240..if the prices tank...

I agree that a good evaluation needs some time. I borrowed a Fuji Xpro 2 for a weekend, it felt good and I bought it some days after. After two weeks I discovered some things I could not live with in the long run and sold it again. Take your time.

WiFi is the modern form of a usb port and both are far away from 1960 theme.
No one needs a usb port today except for some who shoot tethered with a cable in the studio and transfer lots of data but then you need USB 3.0 today.

Well, they are a business ;)
Your options are buy, rent or read other people's reviews.

I would not do this just to check out the M10, but if I was serious about buying one, I'd have no qualms about ordering on Amazon. (They have one left now.) You have thirty days to return it. If you like it (and who wouldn't?), it's yours.
