M2/50 Elmar M difficulty

One of the banjonet lugs may have taken a bang, bending it inwards i.e. towards the lens. It happens when the lens falls on its rear end. It is very hard to bend back, often filing it helps. It is sometimes hard to see the damage as well. If the camera you have now has a lens mount that is not worn and the previous camera was slightly more loose that might just make the difference between turning or blocking.

Thanks for the reply Jaap.

The lens works fine on my M6, so I take it it's OK. What I suppose I need someone to tell me is - does anyone know if there is a physical reason why an Elmar M won't fit on an M2 ??.

I have an M2 that needed an adjustment in the spring pressure of the lens mount. It was very difficult (stiff) to mount and unmount lenses before the adjsutment. (done by Sherry Krauter)

Try mounting the lens (GENTLY) with the back open and on B to see where the problem is. The spring tension of one of the camera springs can be too high and the lens lugs can foul the spring rather than riding over.

You can see how the lens should engage from the camera that works.

I wont tell you what the fix involves in case you have two left hands... Unless you supply a lawyers style disclaimer

Every once in a while you get a mismatch. I have a 21 2.8 Elmarit that is very hard to mount on one M3, but goes on many other M bodies I own. I also have a viso 111 that will not lock onto on of my two M6 cameras, but fits everything else.

I am sure adjustments can be made.

Guys

Thanks for all your kind replies. As luck would have it a 50mm DR Summicron that I'd bought off ebay arrived too yesterday, so I was able to try that on the M2. It goes on/off perfectly, so there must be issues between the the Elmar and the M2. No matter for the moment.

The DR by the way is a thing of absolute beauty. I'd never used any old Leica lenses before. It looks indestructable and the rings turn like silk. If it doesn't turn out to be any good I'll be gutted...

I have an M2 on which it was very difficult to mount (and dismount) the Elmar-M. I had purchased the camera from KEH, so I sent it back. They fixed it. No problems since then. Apparently it is just some minor adjustment to the mounting ring.
