rsilfverberg,
Hey I'm not a leicanut (yet), I say do it! mainly because I want someone to go first. Here are some examples of Russian paint jobs ( they look really nice): http://www.geocities.com/fzorkis/black.html.
Of course that chrome 50/2 may look a little odd.
Todd, that Leica "Hello Kitty" commemorative version is wonderful!
Shintaro is the only person I remember doing custom jobs on Leicas. fzorki does a wonderful job on those FEDs and Zorkis, and his custom jobs made me buy into those Russian RF's. It seems I'm a little out of my league in this case: I don't have another $500 lying about for a custom job, and I'm not really into DIY custom jobs. I think I'll have to get some enamel paint and find one of those rice grain painters here in Amsterdam to paint some freaky 1960s psychedelic scenes (Anyone for tangerine trees and marmelade skies?).
