I got rid of an M4 and an M6 to be able to afford an M8. While I love the M8, when I began to miss shooting film, I bought an M2. I like it better than either the M4 or M6. It's easy and fast to handle. Built to last forever. I like having to use my brain or a hand-held meter to set exposures because it forces me to be more fully engaged. I'm saying all of these good things about the M2 having only shot it for a couple of months and finding that it was it in desperate need of a CLA; I haven't even got it back from Youxin yet (it should arrive tomorrow). It's first CLA in 50 years! I can only imagine how much more I'm going to like it when it's working properly. The only Leica I'd consider giving up my M2 for would be an MP.

After switching from M4&M3 combo to an MP, I wanted a second body that gives me close ergonomics to the MP. M2 was my choice. And yes, some "Soul" factor is there as well (owning a true classic Leica).

Like Rob's, my M2 had not had a CLA in a long long time (long story about this). It just came back from Youxin and the first test roll came out pretty good. It's definitely got a lot smoother, and this 50 years young camera is working as good as my only 6 years old MP.

The lens determines the camera in this case.

The lens determines the camera in this case.

I see this decision resting on lens usage. If you shoot with a 28mm and 75mm, then the M6 is the winner. If you never shoot with either, then an M2 is a less expensive choice. The absence of a light meter doesn't seem to bother you right now, shooting with your Barnack, so that is a secondary issue. BTW, do you wear glasses? That might impact your decision also.

Hehehe, I can't believe this old thread is still going....Robert aka Honus, has long ago bought a m6 and a m2 and then sold off the m2 just recently....

and now for the big news.....

This Christmas Honus will be getting a black camera.....

Yes, it should be arriving in a few days.....

He is quite excited.....

Can anyone guess what camera would induce such JOY in Honus???

One hint: it rocks.... :)

Oh btw, I too have a black rf camera on its way to me....but it takes pictures and can use AE....but it has limited rocking ability ....any guesses? ;)

I know what he's got via our Google Wave chat so I'll keep the secret. ;)

Hint: Welcome to the club. :D

RICOH GR !! :D:D

Hehe, Thomas, that's me talked about Google Wave.

http://google.com/wave

He asked me for an invitation, and he told me about this BIG Christmas gift for himself in our initial wave. (a chat session is called a "wave")

Anyhow, he's got the best camera with the best configurations. :D

Only on RFF can M2's M6's and Google Wave be discussed in the same sentence.

According to my UPS tracking page, which I dutifully refresh every 10 min., the package is on schedule to arrive tomorrow. If you happen to be driving around the Rockridge District of Oakland, California tomorrow and you see a big brown truck in your rear view mirror, then GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!. :D

m6

m6

The answer is an M2 with a rapid load kit,

if you can afford more then an M4p

If you're shooting B/W you can get by without a meter, - look at fred parkers guide to exposure, and learn kodak's sunny-16 real good (on their site and in their film notes)

only buy an M6 if you just go to pieces without a meter. - but m6 is probably the easiest to resell.

What's wrong with a hand held meter to check that you estimated correctly anyway ?

with an m6, which is better...the ttl, or classic. i know about the flash, and the meter being more sensitive, and the overhanging shutter speed dial. in terms of build quality, i'm wondering.

I say an m2 with a Gossen or similar meter. An incident meter will be easier to get an accurate reading with for most people anyway.
