If I didn't know about this and someone comes up to me saying "hey your photo broke the app!" I wouldn't believe it.
I say this is Apple's fault, not Leica's. It's just a horrible software design when a photo can corrupt the library. I use my MacBook Air for my job full-time and love it, but oh boy Apple has certain weaknesses around this kind of stuff.

So can you turn Apple Photos off? I don't use it other than to put photos on a photostream but when I put in the SD card it launches automatically. I use LR6/Photoshop to process and catalog. I'm assuming there is a way to keep the Apple app from launching?

This issue was first published in Jono Slack's review of the MM246 last week, when the MM246 was first announced. I wonder how many MM246 users plan to process their DNG files with Photos. In any event, I expect it will be taken care of pretty quickly.

There used to be a global option in Image Capture.app preferences to tell the system what to do when a camera (a card in a reader is a "camera" to the OS). Later they moved the option to iPhoto.app. I see it's still there ... they haven't moved it to Photos yet.
So run iPhoto, open its preferences, go to the General tab, and set "Connecting camera opens:" to "No application". A card in the card reader or a camera connected directly will not start any Apple app by default.
I've filed a bug report...

Yep, I've had iPhoto set that way "forever" and it never launches when I insert an SD card, but Photos does, regardless. Annoying.

Yep. The only thing I've found you can do so far is to open Photos.app (or wait until it opens up automatically on card insert) and uncheck "Open Photos for this device". You can also do this under Image Capture.app as well. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell you have to do this *for each card* you insert into the computer, and if you format the card it goes back to the default behavior of auto-opening Photos.app
I find this intensely annoying, especially since I always format my cards before use for integrity reasons. Which means I effectively have no way to permanently disable this application.
Hopefully someone comes up with a workaround eventually.

I open Aperture before I connect my camera/SD card. Then I ask Aperture to import. No problems and Photo doesn't launch.

Interesting. I set the option in iPhoto and Photos does not open with a card insert. Hmm. I wonder what I'm doing that's different from what you others are doing.

Interesting! When I got a Mac I tried using my preferred editing software ACDSee Pro to process my 240 files only to discover that the instant you attempt to open a raw file the program crashes.
I reckon it's that pixie dust on the sensor that comes with all Leica M digitals.

Apple puts out betas versions of OS X many times before public release. Photos beta had been out for months. Apple does this so that software suppliers can test their software and make changes as necessary. Apple doesn't have supplier software, either source code or object code. Apple can't make changes to supplier software. The supplier can tell Apple if the problem is with the OS, based on the beta before public release; Apple will investigate and fix. Apple for sure does not have an M246. Yet time after time Leica and Capture 1 let users test their products. There can't be any testing occurring with beta OS software at Leica. The user then always blames Apple. Leica and Capture 1, please download the betas and check your products beforehand. Here's a clue, Windows 10 and OS 10.11 will be ready for beta testing soon; you may want to get ready. Adobe does a superb job of making sure their huge library of complex software works right from day one. I guess you do get something for $9.95 per month that you don't get with an $8000 camera.

Well, I just yesterday freshly set up a new Yosemite system, OS X 10.10.3 installed. There's no data on it at all, nothing's been plugged into it or configured yet. It's not in use yet. I have a source of MM246 raw files.
Seems like an ideal time to make some tests, then file some bugs and enhancement requests... 🙂

I was unable to get that behavior. When I told Photos not to open for a particular card, it didn't matter whether I subsequently formatted it and re-inserted it: Photos would not auto-open once that card had been registered. This is on a complete fresh system install, on a machine that had nothing other than system updates done to it.
Regardless, I think the behavior is silly. There should be a System Preferences option to tell the system (or Finder) what to do when it detects a DCIM image volume or device being mounted, just like there is a System Preferences panel and settings for what to do when CD/DVD volumes are mounted. That's the enhancement request I've made.

I'm just totally disappointed in Photos. I feel that it's a pathetic substitute for Aperture. I don't understand why anyone who is serious about photography would want to use this amateurish program in the first place. Just delete the thing from the computer.
