I have owned two different M6TTLs and both had the stock film advance. I dont have any issues with it, but recently thought about putting an M3 style lever on my current M6.
I've never used an M3 style lever before, so I dont know what to expect. What are the advantages of each lever? Disadvantages of each lever?
Thanks for your help!

I find it a bit easier to get a grip on when first going to wind. On my original, sometimes I would have to poke it so the plastic part flipped out a bit to get ma a thumb-hold.

Can't stand the M6 and M7 lever...I had my M7 switched to the old style. It just feels more solid and responsive to me.

Same experience for me. I had an M6 TTL and came close to getting an M3 style lever on mine. I eventually sold the M6 TTL and now have an MP and M3. I prefer the M3/MP style and have never seen an advantage of the newer style.

... likes film again.
The all-metal style advance lever looks nicer but now I prefer the M4 style lever, much faster in practical usage because in can be flipped out to about 90 degrees angle (with respect to the camera back) and is less slippery than the full-metal advance lever. Just my two cents of course...

You gotta be kidding me. I never even noticed the levers were different on all the Leicas I've owned. This is even worse than than the red dot discussion.
Go shoot some pictures.

Really. Have you checked lately if your cameras have an advance lever? Some don't.

I never even noticed the red dot on all the Leica cameras I own. Oh, wait...that's because they don't have one!

What do you think I'm doing every day, that I should give a crap? If you don't care about feel, you might as well shoot with a plastic SLR. The red dot is meaningless, but the advance lever ought to make you feel good. It was cheap to swap, and I like my camera even better than I did before.

i'm in awe by your awesomeness! is this HCB?
first, you've owned so many leicas. thats so sweet! seriously!
second, wow...you are so in tune with the making of the image that you dont even realize how different the levers are! damn! so spiritual!
third, what a sweet internet moniker...'beemermark'. i take it you also own a BMW!? are you friggin kidding me! so many leicas and a beemer (probably multiple beemers)? that is too much awesomeness for me to handle!
thank you for gracing me with your presense! when you get a chance can you let me know about your impressions between the M6 style lever vs the M3 style lever? that is of course when you get in from taking photos!

boy, this got ugly fast.
to answer the original question...
i had an m6ttl that had the M3 style lever and another m6ttl with the new style one. i liked the M3 style lever, it just felt more comfortable to me. in fact, when i traded my m6ttl, i kept the old lever and put the new one back on it.
for what it's worth, i had my M7 at leica solms for another issue and asked for them to change the levers(advance and frame preview) to the MP style ones. the quote was around $400. i didn't do it.

Beemermark once wrote in a thread:
"I recently replaced my chipped vulcanite with red morocco leatherette from http://www.cameraleather.com/colors/ I went with the cheaper leatherette because I wasn't sure how I would like it or if I was even able to do a good job. Anyway it came out great (easy on but what a mess coming off) and now I want to do my M7. Too many choices but I like the exotic leathers. Help me choose!"
seems like such a silly question for such a serious photographer!
he also wrote in the same thread:
"I'm not that bold to go with cobalt. Morocco for the M4 was an uncharacteristic choice (for me) but I'm glad I picked it, looks so good. I the type of guy who thinks all cameras should be black or chrome and could not conceive of a leatherette color different then black. So this is a big jump for me."
so the dude is posting threads about the color of a skin but he blasts me for something practical like the advantages/disadvantages of an M3 lever!? hahahaha beemermark! if anything, this his thread is WAYYY more like the red vs black dot!

film is exciting
I like the M3 advance lever since its on my M3 , I tried out an M4 and dislike that plastic bit on the advance since it pivots on the lever and feels odd. I like that solid direct feel that the M3 lever has. Perhaps I'm just used to the M3 advance and the rest seem wrong.
