I have both a M3 and IIIf Leica cameras and was wondering why the IIIf has a more modern flash socket and the newer M3 has to have an adapter? I just received a used adapter and later today will try it out. It was not very costly for a used adapter and I hope it works okay.

I assumed the M3 had a different wire that was exclusive to the flash???

From what I understand, Leica where trying to be 'clever' by coming up with an alternative PC socket.

It didn't catch on and now we need to use the silly PC adaptor.

The Leica connector was much superior. They never pulled out unexpectedly.

A competent repair person can unscrew the M3 ones and replace them. Or if the top is off, replace the bar and two sockets as a unit.

There is no need to use those stupid adapters.
