M3 off to Kindermann...

... the official Canadian Leica service guys, to fix the not-rewinding-properly problem I mentioned in my last thread. Gerry Smith seemed like a nice fellow on the phone, and is well recommended.

Yesterday, I found myself sitting looking at a pretty girl in superb hard directional light, wondering how to expose the Tri-X to handle the contrast. But it was purely a speculative exercise, as the partially-functional M3 was home. Clearly I need a backup.

Would you let me know how the Kindermann service was when you get your M3 back. I may have a need to get a CLA done on a Leica and would appreciate some feed back on Kindermann. Yes a backup camera would be good.

Certainly, I will. There a few very well-regarded guys in the TO area: photo.net is a good place to look for reviews of them.

I believe Gerry Smith is the man to talk to at Kindermann. Another guy in Canada that keeps getting very high remarks is Reinhold Mueller (Toronto).

kindermann and gerry smith get great reviews from the locals here as well. my friend who works at the local 'good' camera store and uses old leicas and contaxes has had his cams cla'd there and was very satisified.

Excellent. All I have to do is sweat not having it, I guess.

get a back up, for sure.

I've got my Canonet, of course, and easy access to an M6, but there's no substitute for another M3 right on-site.

I have a Leica body with random light leaks. When I get a roll of film back and there are no shots affected, I'm happy. If there are some leaks... it's no longer a surprise. I'll send it to Leica for refurbishing, but not now.

Good luck with yours and, remember, the day of joy will come when the camera returns to you, all spiffy and ready to go!
