M3 wind gear slipping

Hello all,

I have read and enjoyed this forum at least 9 months now, it has always been informative and friendly. So I have plucked up the courage to place my first post and ask about a problem which has developed with my (to me) 6 month old M3. It is a nice user M3 I picked up with a 50mm 'cron. It has developed a film wind problem whereby the the last 4-5 frames are running together by a couple of mm at the end of a roll. This has only occured recently it seems following a CLA here in Dublin.

I recall a previous thread regarding this problem and can't find it now, can anyone point me in that direction or offer advice as to how best to resolve the problem other than going back to the repair guy (which intend to do when better informed)?

Is it a double-stroke M3? When I decided to get an M3 I spoke with a couple of the techs and they advised me definitely to get a single-stroke. They said the double-strokes eventually fail like you describe, and the parts are no longer available to fix them. The only recourse is to replace the entire winding head with a single-stroke, to the tune of several hundred dollars.

Amazingly, those two experts are not required for every repair question. We have a surprising amount of mechanical/technical experience among our members willing to help with diagnosis and instructions for some repairs... and to suggest whether it may indeed need attention from a top shop. 🙂
