M3 with Prism Separation

I've been lurking here for a while, and I am impressed with the collective knowledge on the RFF.

I have an opportunity to buy a M3 (SS) with prism separation (is that the same thing as balsam separation?) for $295. The M3 is otherwise in fine condition, both cosmetically and mechanically with accurate shutters.

Does anyone know how much the repair may be and who can repair prism separation? I know Youxin Ye has a good reputation for quality and value, but can he make this type of repair?

It's not the same as balsam separation and definitely costs more. Some separations can be fixed by re-cementing the prism - priced at 200-300USD here in Toronto... Replacing the whole finder is around 400USD. FYI, my M3 has separations and if you keep it away from abuse (which is mechanical stress and temperature contrast) they can stay the way they are for quite a long time... 295$ is the greatest deal for a SS M3 ;-)

Thanks for the advice. I talked to Youxin Ye yesterday and asked for his advice. He can fix prism separation for $120. However, the main problem is he cannot tell if the issue is separation or prism de-silvering until he opens up the rangefinder (which then would be an expensive repair from Lutton). It would be a gamble for me to buy this unless the seller is willing to take it back. Therefore, Youxin Ye advised that I don't buy this camera, and instead, buy one from KEH.

Kudos to Youxin Ye for taking the tme to explain this to me and for his honest advice.

I think, a M3 is always worth to try. I can not make any estimates about your finance situation, but you are letting a great deal go away.

Yes, I could be letting a great deal go away. But if it requires a $400 prism repair, then it is no longer a great deal. A good one still, but KEH probably has better value at that point.
