Hi,

does anyone know of a technician that has the ability to proceed to this conversion at a reasonable price please? CRR gave me a quote of 300 GBP around 500 USD which is a lot I think.

Thanks

depends on which motor. If it is for the original M-motor - it requires special gears and microswitches and then $500 sounds reasonable.
If it is for the later M-power winder or the "clunky" M4-2/M4P and M-winder it is a simple operation. I know that Don Goldberg does it and also Kinderman in Toronto. Not a complex operation as it is an intermediate drive coupling from a M6/M4P. Usually costs a couple of $100 from what I hear.

Not sure what you mean by original M-motor, but I mentioned I was interested in using my camera with a rapidwinder/leicavit, and he gave me that quote.

I've been offered to swap my M4 that badly needs a CLA for an M4-P for the price of that conversion, which is best?

Which model is it you're referring to?

There used to be a M2/M4 Mot in the 60's, initially built by Goldberg, later "adopted" by leica.
The current motor-winder uses a drive that connects with the take-up at the bottom of the camera. This is also the coupling that my Rapidwinder uses as well as the Leicavit-M.
If your M4 needs a serious service, that is a decent swap. The M4P is one of the best of the M's - added feature is the 28/75 frames and the drive for R-winders and Leicavit M's.
Do budget for a quick CLA of the M4P if you do the deal - always a good idea with a "new" old camera anyway. It should be good for 10 years at least (or 10 000 rolls, whichever comes first).
