OK, new thread, RE: M5 viewfinder and 28mm lens.

The review I had read was http://www.photo.net/equipment/leica/m5/ ... scroll down to the illustrations of the VF and framelines. Are these inaccurate? Seems to me there is adequate space around the 35 framelines, but maybe the illustration is "off". Definitely the exposure display at the bottom would obstruct part of the image when using a 28.

Should we start a different thread for this?

On the one hand, the M5 magnification is 0.72 just like the M6 & M7. On the other hand, I would have to say that the photos are very generous around the 35mm framelines. Maybe I'm just picky. Like I said, I'll know for sure next week.

The viewfinder edges aren't that much bigger than the 35mm frame and meter bar.

I doubt it. I have no way of knowing. It's from the article cited above.

I'm back from the shop. Here's what I learned:

1. There is more area around the 35mm frame than I thought. However, you have to look left, right, top & bottom to find it. When looking straight ahead, your eye only sees the 35mm lines.

2. The 28mm framelines in an M4-P go out to the edges of the viewfinder.

3. The 28mm Konica lens brings up the 90mm framelines on the M5. This is good actually. You can then look around the edges to see the whole viewfinder frame.

4. It seems to work ok. I don't think a 28mm viewfinder is really required.

Cheers!

M5 + 28mm frame line

M5 + 28mm frame line

After almost 1 roll of film my opinion is that the M5 doesn't really need the 28mm frame line. The 28mm lens brings up the 90mm frame (the meter area for the 28mm lens) and the rest of the viewfinder is nice and empty. If the pictures prove me wrong I'll slip the Komura 28mm finder in the hot shoe.

Cheers!

I wear high refractive eye glasses, they threaten a free stick and dog, but I can manage without a finder most days... 28mm with M2 & M4. If you are right eyed and can keep both eyes open it is a different world.
