Has anybody here tried out one of the eyepiede magnifiers, 1.25x or 1.4x on the M5?

If so, can you see the meter needles when using the mag? I have a 90mm lens that is very nice, but would like to enlarge the frame and rangefinder a bit. But I like to see the meter too.

Please share experiences. Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea. The 1.25 would bring the .72 finder of the M5 up to about 1.13 or so. That's stronger than the M3, which is 0.91.

I'll watch this thread. If it works, I might want one for my M5.

I think I saw a variable strength magnifier on eBay. It acts as both a diopter correction and a magnifier. Whether it's any good for either purpose is another matter.

Hap, looking forward to a report. Thanks!

Rob-F, .72 * 1.25 = .90 .72 * 1.4 = 1.0 (approx), either of which sounds pretty good to me IF I can see the meter needles.

I've got one of these on an M5 and it allows me to use the camera without using my glasses. I can see the meter strip perfectly, which was the original question.
I have the J type as indicated in this ad. The upside of this Chinese magnifier/diopter is that the diopter is infinitely adjustable within its range.. so you are not stuck with limited arbitrary diopter levels (-2, -1.5, -1 etc). I have a Leica 1.25 magnifier on my M3, which is nice, but my view through the Chinese one is notably better simply because it's variable. The glass/optics of the Bresson one is every bit as good as the Leica glass.

The downside of this is that it's "big" relatively speaking. Has never seemed an issue in practice for me as I welcome the ease of focusing, and don't notice the size any more than if it were not there, but others might feel differently. It looks unsightly on the back of the body, but it has made the camera more usable than possible otherwise, and is a non-issue in practice.

You can only see the meter needles if you drastically shift the position of your eye. They are completely invisible if you look through the VF normally to focus/compose etc.
Of note, even the 50mm frames are cut off and you need to move your eye around a bit to see them.

Good data! It sounds like I would want the 1.25 if I go for the OEM version unless I get it strictly for the 90.

I'm left-eye-dominant, so the size of the Chinese one might give me a bit more "nose room".

Thanks for the info!
