Hello all,I have had my M5 for almst a year and I have always noticed that when I cock the shutter a small ball bearing goes "pig" and bounces around. I'm sure this is the design. My question is am I supposed to be able to hear it?
It's louder than the shutter.

Are you sure that's not the meter arm snapping back into position? With a lens mounted, the last few degrees of wind arm travel puts the meter arm back into position and it goes 'boing' when it happens..
See if the sound goes away with no lens on as you wind.
On one of my M5 a screw near the base of the arm pivot had gotten loose and the arm scraped a baffle as it went into position, sounding and feeling awful. I think that was probaly why that body was up for sale in the first place. A quarter turn of a screwdriver fixed it.
You can see the arm in action if you put an LTM adaptor on then unscrew the lens, leaving the adaptor to press the lens detect lever at the base of the bayonet mount.

Bigfoot & Bubba don't make any sounds like you describe. Actually, the "boing" thing isn't that noticeable. I'm not sure I've noticed it. I'm off to take some pictures in a few minutes. I'll listen for the "boing."

I had written my post and then I took out my M5 and took a few pictures just to make sure. The ball bearing sound was much more subdued now and it is not louder than the shutter. I remember using just a very small amout of Hopps Lubricating gun oil on some of the moving parts about 3 months ago. Perhaps this has worked or perhaps I was wrong all along about the loud ball bearing pinging around inside my camera sound. But then I wonder why I oiled the camera.
Anyway I thought I cancelled my original post, now I see it was posted. Sorry.

Very interesing about the meter arm. That may just be what I am hearing. It's not loud but I do here it during the last few degrees of the film advance lever stroke. I think I can even feel a resistance building up to the moment the sound occurs. I'd say you got it right and it's not a ball bearing pinging and careening around inside the body, it's the meter being reset as you have described. Thank you very much.

There is definitely a change in transport lever resistance-force. No doubt about that. Not anything bad, just different, the last 5 or 10 degrees. These cameras are amazing compared to the bazookas folks are so thrilled with. If there is any ambient noise at all I sometimes wonder if I pressed the shutter all the way.
Glad your M5 is quiet again.

M5 so quiet

M5 so quiet

After using any of my SLRs/DSLRs sometimes when I take a picture with my M5 I hold it away from my eyes and look at it! It's a reflex (could that be a punn?) action, because it's so silent I look at it in order to convince myself that I just took a picture.
I also get a feeling after I have pressed the shutter release button and hear the faint "snick" of the shutter that I have successfully captured what I wanted.
