How many M5`s out there?
They seem to be the rarest! But dont make the money that GX, CC & CCN`s Make.
Plus points.
Hmm, quite light! or is that bad?
No manual Aperture control as such. f2.8, 8 & 16 and Auto flash.
Minus Points
Lens is a slow 2.8 45mm.
Build quality? Light? feels a bit tinny.
Quite big compared to GX,CC.

Don't think I ever read anything about a Yashica M5 here. That's how rare it might be.
I thought you were referring to a Leica M5!

I got one! It's nearly in mint condition. It's nice to look at, but in the one year since I bought it on ebay for 29$ (including shipping) I never really bothered taking pictures with it. It is indeed lighter than an Electro 35: 565g the M5, 733g a 35 GS. This - and the kind of hollow sound of the release button - leads to a "less quality" feeling compared with most other Yashicas.
Since I bought mine I have seen a second one on ebay, going for roughly the same price. I guess, that's because most Yashica-fans don't know about it (they should, because it is mentioned on the yashica-guy website).

For all those interested in acquiering a M5: There is one right now on ebay, ending in about 20 and a half hours. It seems to be in a very good condition. But see for yourself: 110487248268
The sellers name is "Yashicamania". Is that someone from this group?

I have one but only to have my Yashica collection complete. BTW I'm selling the entire collection this year to any interested. It goes complete or not at all. All the RF models in one place.

I also have one. It's an interesting camera but it's not in the same league as a "G" series electro. Good fun though!

After a couple of years I see M5 listed again (260554087166).
Just realized it has Lynx 5000-style body, release button and top cover with embossed YASHICA. Also RF patch is rectangle not "diamond".
It's clearly collectors camera because plain G-series camera doesn't miss anything from M5 except styling. Heck, besides being fully AE, M5 doesn't has even DOF scale on lens!

I were surprised to see elusive fully AE M5 went for a price of a good Lynx 14 (which are expensive in Europe).

Just for information purposes, the top and bottom covers are pressed from aluminium.

Is it really worth anything...other than to add to my collection? I have a chance to get one for under $50.

I have one too. It feels unrefined compared to the other Electros. Poorly made is another way of saying it. Definitely just a collectible imo. That said It is rare and $50 is a good price if it's in collectable condition.
BTW.. Russ, I missed your question 2 years ago. I decided to keep the collection intact and never actually sold it.

I've got an M5 as well as a G, GT, GSN, and MG-1, and the M5 is by far the cheapest feeling of them all, however it does have an appeal that the others seem to lack. Maybe it's the slightly smaller size and the attractive stamped top plate? Who knows. I was a full blooded Yashica-man until I found my beloved Bessas.

Leica M5 is stupid camera. I pay $50 to anyone who wants to dump theirs. They are ugly. You look stupid wearing one. I pay $50 to take it off your hands.

Yashica M5 is a strange camera
Yashica M5 is a strange camera
The Yashica M5 is a strange camera. Like the other Electros, it's Aperture-preferred auto exposure only.
Unlike others, it has no iris diaphragm, only a three position control that chooses one of three pre-stamped apertures (are they all round? just holes in a piece of metal?). No in-betweens. The three positions are sun, cloud, and window. Yashica-guy has a writeup on this camera.
I've got one, but alas, Mark Hama tells me it has water damage and will never take another picture.
I think it's possibly interesting to a collector, but I would use another camera for any photo-making.
