Does the M5 do TTL with only Leica flash units? Or 3rd party "dedicated Leica flashes"? I have a Nikon SB-30 which I could use non-TTL with some flexibility but I would give more consideration to buying an M5 if I could use the TTL flash. Thanks.

The M5 does one thing very well. Make good photos.

I use a Sunpak Auto 383 flash with my M5 bodies. I meter normally and the flash fills in the blanks. The combination works very well. I can't imagine metering through the lens would make any difference.

If you want use the TTL flash auto exposure, the only Leica M that allows the TTL flash auto exposure are the M6 TTL or M7, only with Leica or Metz dedicated flash units.
The Leica M5, as the CL, M6 or MP, allow only the normal ambient TTL exposure, NOT TTL FLASH.
Ciao.
