Is the .85 finder on the "classic" M6 as bad as I've heard regarding flare and not being able to see the whole 35mm frame? Some places even reccommend getting the MP finder put into an old M6 (I thought that might be a little expensive).

Anyone have firsthand experience with both finders?

I have a .85 on my M6TTL. I cant say I've had many flare problems, but the 35mm frame is damn hard to work with.

I can see most of it, but it takes a lot of searching in the finder to make sure I'm framing correctly.

You'll get used to it though. If the price is right on the camera just go ahead and get it.

I have a .85 mag M6. Flare is not a big issue. I did notice it 2 or 3 times in certain situations. With glasses on I cannot see all the 35mm framelines at once. Without glasses I can, but everthing is blurry. I won' tupgrade the viewfinder, and since I shoot mainly 50mm, I love the high mag.

I only have experience with the 0.72 mag on an M6 but I have a 0.85 mag M7 and I second Frank's comment. If you shoot a lot at 50mm or above get the 0.85; it's wonderful. I've hardly experienced any flare on my M6 BTW.

might not matter, but the 50mm framelines are interrupted by the metering display in the .85. finally got to try it last month, and i prefer the .72.

I have a .85 mag M6TTL. While I'm not wearing glasses, this finder works great for 35mm. Just make sure to center your eye exactly in the middle of the finder. If your eye is a bit out of the center you will see this flare-thing.

I agree. I find the 35mm eminently usable on an 0.85 mag cam. I really like the magnification and recently considered getting another one.

thanks

thanks

sounds good. I'll probably buy that body and start shooting. I am travelling over New Year's and I'll need some practice first.

Ditto. I am able to use 35 mm on .85 magnification without trouble on my M6 TTL, and I don't wear glasses. I am also thinking of getting a classic M6 .85X, but perhaps a .72X is another good option. 😉
