Friends,

I have an old M6 and since a few days, the exposure meter does weird things. The left red arrow works fine, but the right red arrow shines all the time, regardless of time and aperture combination. Batteries are new from the store.

Do you know this phenomenon and what could I do?

You could do two things:

1- Use a light meter to match the exposure with your setting on the camera to see if the camera's meter is bad.

2- Use the camera in fully manual mode like any other decent Leica user.

Use the camera in fully manual mode like any other decent Leica user.

That kind of defeats the purpose of buying a camera with a built in light meter. I also suspect plenty of decent folk make use of the built in meters in their cameras.

A couple things you might want to try. Use a pencil eraser to gently clean the 3 gold contacts in the camera back. Take out the batteries and clean the battery chamber. Last and often effective, change the film speed dial. Press the film speed dial and rotate from one extreme to the other then reset to correct speed and meter . Hopefully one or all of these will work. If not, Dag can probably fix the meter you have without simply replacing with a new circuit. I have heard that Sherry Krauter usually just replaces the old circuit with a new board, a more expensive fix. Dag fixed my M6 meter which had a short 6 months ago and its working well.
