HI there,

Sorry for asking but I have a Leica M7 and I know that the shutter speed dial turns differently from other Leicas.

I was comtemplating trading it for a M8 but I guess that I will get a M6 or M6 TTL instead.

Which of the M6 (TTL or non TTL ) the shutter speed dial turns in the same direction of the M7 ( ie of the exposure in the viewfinder ?) I know the MP turns the other way.I think the M6 TTL is like the M7 wereas the M6 non TTL would be different. Im jsut checking before taking a plunge on ebay 🙂

By the way, is there any substancial differences between a M6 and M6TTL ? the TTL on the description applies only to flash TTL exposure right ? Apart from that, they are most identical ?

Best regards

Hi, the M6TTL dials turn in the same direction of the M7's and in the opposite direction of those on the M6 (aka 'Classic') and the MP.
TTL vs Classic differences beyond dimensions and TTL flash exposure metering are an increased sensitivity lightmeter, a third central round LED indicating correct exposure and the 'OFF' position on the speeds dial on the TTL. They also come in three different VF magnifications against 2 in the Classic, even if the HM=.85X classic is very scarce.
Best,

Ed

What Ed said - and welcome to the forum Ed! 🙂 All of the earlier models as well as the M6 have shutter speed dials that turn in the opposite direction to the M7 and M6TTL. FWIW I started with an M6TTL and moved on to the M7.

Correct, the M6TTL and M7 have dials that turn the correct way.

What do I mean? Well, when your meter in the viewfinder is indicating over or under exposure, to correct that you will turn the dial in the direction of the arrow. Simple little creature feature. In the classic M6 and MP you must turn it in the opposite direction.

A little difference, but a significant one for the Leica world as all earlier models are like the MP and M6.

A lot of people are unhappy about the shutter direction switch that happened with the introduction of the M6TTL. Almost all of those people have internalized the "old" direction. However, if like me you came to Leica recently and bought an M6TTL the way that camera works is ergonomically "correct" as rover states. Some peiople have problems using cameras with shutter dials that operate in opposite directions and it can be a factor in missing shots in the field. That's why AE is so great. 😉
