Hi guys,
I thank you all for the help and guidance. I took an Ultron from a friend for a test drive last Thursday.
I found the lens very easy to use and the 35 framelines made perfect sense to me. Actually - 35 is the field of view that I see in the VF (I'm wearing thick glasses and can't see the 28)
I included a sample from the test drive. I know it's not technically perfect - but I find that encouraging - I'm getting into a long and exciting process of learning.

I decided take the Ultron as the first lens for my M6 and ordered a black copy from Mr. Gandy (they are running low, btw).

One question I have regarding the lens - the copy I'm currently holding is mounted with and M-mount adapter. The adapter seems perfectly aligned but the lens isn't. The black dots of the center of the depth of field scale, and the aperture are not in "12 o'clock" but tend toward one o'clock?

Does it suppose to be this way or is it just this copy?

Which o'clock?

Which o'clock?

If the lens is seated/screwed well into the adapter, and the adpater is bringing up the frame lines clearly, then the notch in the adapter should be at 12 o'clock with the camera's black dot showing through the adapter's notch. The lens' aperature and DOF scale dots should be at 12 also.

Be sure to check and see if the lens will tag infinity without back focusing. Mr. Gandy and I seem to be at odds about this. He claims to have 'sold thousands of adapters without any returns', and that 'rangefinders only focus at infinity at distances of one mile or more'.

Without bringing the ire of all the VC lovers on this site I can say no more other than I have had better VC adapters than others, and I have returned adapters.

My 15mm Heliar ended up at one o'clock. Normally it wouldn't worry me, but the 15mm's hood is fixed to the lens, and I thought it might vignette (or skew the light falloff at wider apertures... ;) ). I found out that removing the rear flange on the lens reveals an arc of three holes under each screw, so turning the flange to the correct hole put the lens at twelve o'clock. I figured out that this just rotates the entire lens and doesn't move it (or the focusing cam, if it had one) in relation to the film plane, i.e., it has the same effect on focus as taking a picture at an angle.

Perhaps someone knows whether the Ultron has the same arrangement? I'm not going to advise you to remove the flange, just in case there's a hidden surprise underneath...

My Ultron has always lined up perfectly with its VC adaptor. I presume this is what should happen.

My Ultron lines up at 11 o'clock (looking down at the camera with lens pointing away from me) on both my M6 and M4.
I don't worry about it - doesn't affect my photography.

Dan, I agree with you, in particular on the M3. The only adapters that
are really consistent are old Leitz adapters. And I am a VC lover.

To the OP: very nice photo.

Also shows how great the lens' OOF is.

Roland.

even on LTM cameras, the lenses don't always line up at 12. My copy of the ultron is consistently at 1oclock.

Provided that it is focussing correctly - I wouldn't worry about it.

Great photo btw.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the answers and for the compliment on the photo.
The lens and adapters I have in hand seem to work and focus well, however, the lens back focuses a bit a distances of more than 5 meters.
I don't know if the alignment really matters, I just wanted to make sure I'm not the only one having it. Anyway, I hope that the adapter and lens that I bought will be aligned at 12 o'clock....

PS1 - It's so nice to have a fast lens and a good RF. I did a lot of night time street photography. With my DSLR (Canon 30D) I used ISO 800 and a slow lens and had problems focusing most of the times. With my previous RFs (Canonet and Olympus SP) the lenses were presumably 1.7, but behaved very poorly wide open (not mentioning very difficult to focus at night), so I used Neopan 1600 and the shots werer very grainy.
With the Ultron I put ISO 400, wide open lens and speed 15 and went shooting :). They turned out smooth, clear (even a bit overexposed) and with a lovely DOF and bokeh.

PS2 - I have the camera less than a week and shot 4 rolls. Two of them were not exposed at all. I loaded the film according to the manual, which said that I only had to close the camera and the film will be taken care of. It wasn't....

Now, after practicing a bit loading/unloading the same rolll, it seems that I shold have aligned the film nicely on the track and take one shot with camera open to see it fits and advances.... and also see that the rewind wheel rotates while advancing the film....

Any tips on loading will be appriciated. I should note that I feell very stupid with this entire issue....

Hi Assaf. Are you happen to reside in Israel ? If yes, there is a good bunch of RFFers in the country (we have our local sub-forum here on RFF). Besides, I also own M6 so if you are in the country I'll be happy to offer my help in short M6 recourse or just a nice shootout together.

Regards, Alex

Hi Assaf,

nice shot you made! I have also an M6TTL with an Ultron 35mm /f1.7 with adapter and the notch lies at 12 o'clock but the black dot on 1 o'clock. I dont have any problem with focusing until now.

I think mine is pretty much tdc. It is indeed a beautiful lens. I don't think I have ever seen a concave front element on any other lens!
