M7 Service Quote - What Would You Do?

I sent my black M7 to Leica NJ for the DX upgrade and asked for a quote on rangefinder calibration (it's time) and perhaps the MP finder upgrade. Here's what just came back:

DX upgrade = Under warranty

Rangefinder calibration/CLA = $300

MP Finder Upgrade = $500 in addition to the $300 above.

I guess Leica does not give a CLA or MP finder swap with the DX upgrade anymore. My M7 is a 9+ and I've had ideas of either keeping it forever or perhaps trading it toward an MP.

Another disappointment is that I was told before I sent in the M7 that it would be 2-3 weeks turnaround but today I was told 4-5 weeks.

Any input would be appreciated.

Dean

I don't understand your logic or dissapointment?

Why is it time for a RF calibration? Are there any objective problems that you have or even any subjective? If not, why do it and spend money?

The viewfinder upgarde is simply not worth the expense and is not noticebale to me. forget it an save an additioanl $500.
So you are left with ano cost DX upgrade.
What don't you like about 4-5 weeks? That's what it takes.
I sent my two M7's off for the DX upgrade a couple of years ago when both DX readers started to have problems. Since the cameras were headed for Solm's, I had the Finder upgarde done on both at the same time. One for free as it was under warrenty and one cost me. Both were cleaned and checked by the technician and the covering was replaced on one because the tech didn't lke the fit. No added cost.
Can't tell nay difference in the finders.
DX readers work.
3-4 weeks as quoted but I planned for it.
Your idea of "keeping it forever" or "trading it toward an MP" are two vastly different outcomes and I don't understand how this is related to upgrading the DX reader?-Dick

Nice to see someone else address this. I've shot all kinds of M bodies, including M4-2 and M6 and never noticed any difference in the finders.
You've been lucky. Ten or fifteen years ago, shooting an outdoor folk concert at night, my M4-P was unusable (similar finder to M4-2 and M6) but my M2s were both fine. The MP and M9 are roughly comparable with the M2 -- but with exactly the wrong lighting, any RF patch can flare out.

Cheers,

R.

My M4-2 is the first production run, which has the M4 optics which I preferred. They changed the finder in the second run to the same optics as M4-P and M6. I've not had any problems with either M4-2 or M9, so far, but I agree the flare out can happen with any if the light is just right.

I'll take it if I have been lucky. I do notice the patch in the M9 or MP flare on occasion (as I did the M6) but never to an unusable extent. And granted I don't shoot much in situations where I'm not able to move around to mitigate any flare. My experience suggests tho that the problem (like so many things) is more discussed on the internet than it occurs in real life.

Mine too. As I say, there was ONE concert where my M4-P was consistently unusable. Apart from that... That's in around 40 years of Ms.

M7 with MP finder ?

M7 with MP finder ?

I sent my M7 last year to Solms through my dealer in Luxembourg, EU, for a DX conversion.
It came out a few weeks later in good working order; didn't pay a cent.
How does one notice about the MP finder ?
I have a Leica MP but I cannot figure out any differences with my M7 for the finder...
Thanks

Thanks for the all great replies and input. Since my original post I've received the written estimate from Leica (the original info was telephonic). It shows:

DX Upgrade - Warranty

Adjust R/F; Replace or clean all switches; Repair DIN/ASA setting; Check complete meter system; Adjust Shutter Release; Clean and adjust brake; Clean, lubricate, adjust all functions - $300

Upgrade viewfinder to MP type - $500 extra

Interestingly two needed parts are listed ... the DX gear and new body leather (I guess this is included in the $300 work but I don't recall a single issue with my original leather).

The viewfinder work is necessary because it's out of adjustment. So I've decided to go with the DX upgrade and $300 work. Based largely on the input here, I've decided against the MP finder upgrade. And I appreciate the general M7 v. MP input which confirms what I should have known (or maybe knew) - I'll be keeping the M7 for the long term.

Thanks so much. What a great forum.
