I have an M8.2 now and would just like to compile forum member ideas about what should be in the next firmware release.
One thing i would like to see is a way to manually enter the lens type via the menu system. eliminating the need for codind older lenses.

What sense does this make? Are you going to write alternative firmware?

The best camera is one that still works!

Well I guess it makes no sense to someone who was able to move seamlessly to the M9 as soon it became available.
For the rest of us, who can't quite make that financial leap, a few improvments to what we're stuck with would be nice if Leica could manage it!

He meant what sense does it make to speculate, not what sense does it make to upgrade the firmware.

If we never speculated we'd still be scrabbling around on the forest floor looking for berries to eat!

There's already a list:
- Manually selectable lenses
- EC correction via the back dial
- ISO selection via LOCK button
There is a guy at l-camera-forum who says there will be two steps of firmware upgrade for the M8/M8.2 after an upgrade for the M9.
First an upgrade for better color-managment.
Second for manually selectable lenses.
I do not know from whom he received the news. Maybe just wishful thinking, who knows?
Keep the thread and the list warm. I would be happy with
- Manually selectable lenses
- ISO selection via LOCK button
And what is?
- EC correction via the back dial
Do you mean EV: Exposure Value? That´s already a shortcut via back dial at the M8.2.

I want to hug him.
If he is open to a wish-list for a third upgrade,
having an option for 16-Bit raw files would be nice.

Besides a manual lens-selection I would love to have:
- Exposure compensation (EV) using up and down buttons
- ISO selection using back and forth buttons
Both without the need for pressing the shutter (like the current EV using the dial) and both with and optional acoustic confirmation with different tones for different values.

When was the latest update? It has been some time I think. Last time I loaded an update I got discrete mode. I thought we would be getting an update much sooner. Is Leica forgetting us M8/M8.2 owners and giving priority to the M9? I think this is a valid question.

I've not used a lot of different other digital cameras, but I can't remember having had any firmware upgrade with significant new features or fixes. Compared to that, Leica does quite well. I wouldn't think the M8 gets forgotten totally with regard to firmware updates. That wouldn't quite fit into Leica's concept. However, they probably consider the M8 firmware rather mature now, so no need to hurry. Other firmware products might require some care more urgently.

I would enjoy being recognized by Leica with respect to a firmware update for the M8.2. In reality, I would be thankful if they just keep a spare parts inventory for future repairs.

Indeed I did. I guess Santa reads all the letters he gets as well...
