Over the holidays I upgraded to 2.002 and got two SanDisk Extreme III 8gig cards. I've just formated one and it shows 999 exposures.

I had read that turning the camera off, back on, shooting a frame and back off and on would result in a more rational number of exposures.

Not happening for me.

Any suggestions?

Dunno, but my Pentax *ist DS is the same. Once you shoot down to a number under 1,000, it will count rationally again. I guess nobody ever thought anyone would have more than 1,000 photos on a card.

Found it. Forgot to change back to DNG and the 2.002 upgrades reset back to JPEG rather than DNG. The exposure count is now a rational number for DNG.

I just came back from several weeks in Europe having shot with a Transcend 16GB SDHC card. Have faith. Eventually, if you shoot enough, it actually starts counting down. I shot RAW only, and after 906 shots on this card, I still have 521 shots to go according to the counter.

This is almost humorous? A digital camera that does extremely complex calculations but can't guesstimate the number of exposures remaining??? :D

Arithmetic. Each M8 DNG exposure is ca. 10.6MB. So (roughly) 16,000,000,000 / 10,600,00 = 1500 exposures on a 16GB card. The counter only shows 3 digits. "999" means that you have more than 999 images left. As mentioned previously in this thread, as soon as you pass around 500 exposures, the counter will show you the real number left. I wonder when they are going to do a real upgrade to the firmware, put the important info on the LCD and leave us to decide what goes in the little window on top. Temperature, ISO, EV, time of day?
