Does anyone know from personal experience how the M8 handles in say 75-90 degree weather with close to 100% humidity. In mid, possibly June, 2010 I may be going to Uganda to document a health clinic being built. I'll also be helping with building it. So it's going to be a big documentation project for me. In preparation for this event I'll be applying for a grant, which needs to be written to every last detail. I know for sure I'll be bringing my M6, but I would like a digital camera as well.

Just looking to see if anyones been in similar weather conditions before to say how the camera handles.

Thanks.

I was walking my dog at 6 am this morning. Got caught in a light drizzle, probably 100% humidity (or might close) here in Victoria. It wasn't the first time either. I've never had an issue at all with heat/humidity.

I am 35 miles from the Texas coast and keep my M8 in the car always to keep it from fogging when I take it outside from an air conditioned home. I have never had any issues with high humidity/high heat (and we went through 72 straight days at 95 or higher this summer - not a typical summer I might add).

I have used my M8 here in Norway during winters, and once I left it in my rucksack too long while skiing... It ended up lying in there partly covered with snow, and to make things worse I had forgotten to bring a plastic bag to use when getting in on the subway... (Yes, I can take the subway directly into the hills - just walking 100meters before being on the tracks 😀 )

Of course it blacked out, and when I came back home I took out the battery and basically left it as open as possible for perhaps an hour. It was really hard waiting of course...

After drying up it worked OK, and I have not had any problems with it since then.

I think you should be OK if you plan this a little. Perhaps you could bring some bags with silica gel? If you leave it in a sealed plastic bag with a newly opened bag of silica during the night, it should dry up quite well. Remember that fungus comes after a while when cameras are constantly in high humidity, it should help making it less continuous I believe... I am sure the M8 will work for the duration of your stay though!

Perhaps you could even bring a meter, there must be places and times when it is not flat out 100% moisture? I guess there are some tricks that you can apply, perhaps you should try a forum for nature-photographers?

Well, I live in Hong Kong, where the summers are 30C+ and over 80% humidity for most of the time, and the M8 is fine. The killer is taking items like this from air conditioning (say, 24C) outside into 30C and high humidity, then you get huge condensation on everything. This is amplified by the high metal content of the body, rather than plastic/composite of many of the current crop of SLR's. Bear in mind that 100% humidity is something that probably only happens in the middle of a tropical rainstorm and then for a very short time, so even the worst sustained humidity would be around 80% - otherwise you would drown in the air......

Comfortable weather it most certainly is not....

A winter and summer in Ocho Rios and Negril. Daily temps 76 to 90 F. Humidity from 50 to 80%. No Problem mon. The only issue I had was getting the camera from room A/C to outdoor temps. I put the camera in my bag in the mornings, and didn't return it into tha A/C until I was done using it for the day/night.
Common sense plays a big part for anything with circuit boards.
