I have an M3 ss with a 50mm 1.5 lens. My question is whether I would be able to use this lens with an M8? Would I need to have the lens modified?

Yes, you can use it, if M mount adapter is on already. I am using it too.
It is wonderful lens, but I feel not as soft as you use on film. I love on film rather than M8

I couldn't call up anything on the search tool--what about a Jupiter-8 on an M8? I presume there's some kind of adapter...

The only thing is you'll want to get an IR-cut filter for it, to avoid weird color shifts (or b&w tone shifts) resulting from the lack of adequate IR filtration on the M8/8.2's sensor. The Summarit takes an E41 41mm filter. I'm not sure if Leica, B+W or Heliopan makes one. If they do, you're all set. If not then you could use a 41-43 or 41-46 step-up (which might preclude using the original shade) or 41-40.5 or 41-39 stepdown adaptor (doubt it would vignette because of the cropped image circle)...if any of those adaptors exist. It might also be possible to transfer the glass from a 40.5 B+W 486 into an old E41 Leica filter mount.

I use a step-up ring and mount a 46mm IR filter on mine (when I use an IR filter-which is not often). 50mm lenses do not need to be coded for the M8 (neither of mine are.)
The 50 summarit is a nice lens on the M8.

I got the Summarit with the M-mount, no adapter needed. Very clean copy. Used a 40.5mm UV/IR filter. The do screw onto the 41mm thread. Some samples:

The 1950s and 60s 50mm Summicrons and Summiluxes work really well too. I've found problems with Nikon and Canon glass having more back-focusing issues--except for my black Nikon LTM 85/2. That one focuses and works perfectly.

I haven't had any brand-specific focus problems w/lenses on my M8. I have a '50s Rigid Summicron that front-focuses & my '80s 75/1.4 Summilux back-focuses. The Summicron is also off on film bodies (I have a Tokyo Optical 50/1.5 Simlar that behaves similarly), but the 75 'lux is only problematic on the M8. Other vintage lenses have been fine, including a collapsible 50 'cron, LTM Nikkors & Canons, & a LTM 50/1.5 CZJ Sonnar.
