M8 Cold Weather Camera

In case someone told you the M8 doesn't work well in cold climates. We are having a blizzard right now, high winds, heavy snow and extreme cold, here's what it looks like.

There is nothing wrong at all, but it is an all-metal compact camera with compact Li-Ion batteries, so one gets limited battery capacity through cold a bit sooner than with big, plastic-insulated, large battery cameras. Not a problem, just carry a spare battery in a warm pocket and start off with fully charged ones.
 
The RF arm of mine froze up, in our cold Canadian winter, and needed a trip to Leica New Jersey to resolve.

Otherwise, no issues.

The electronics seemed to like the cold weather just fine.

It's handling this weather just fine. The temp here right now is -12 and winds are up to 24 mph with very heavy snows. I took the dogs and the M8 for a walk and it performed flawlessly.
 
No problem!, I figured if people could see the conditions it was beariing they would get a good idea of how well it performs in the cold. I should have made it clearer.
 
I had my M8 in my convertible today. I had the top down all afternoon. The camera didn't miss a beat even though it got down to the 80’s today.

So there we have it - the M8 can handle January weather from minus 12 and snow to a cool sunny 82 in the same day.

What's a convertible? You don't see too many of hem up here, enjoy the nice weather and how about sharing some with us.
 
I don't have any problems with the M8 and cold wather, too.
-13celcius, wind etc.. works perfect!

I had mine out for 4 days in averge 30' weather. We were camping so the camera never really warmed up much. Overall I saw about an estimated 50% decrease in batt life and one night we were out using the M8 as a flash monitor for the RZ67 at about 15' ambient + 25mph wind and a newly recharged battery lasted about 8 frames! I think I found the "too cold" line :)

I have used the M8 a bunch outside at 30' or so wth no issue but it has always been inside and warm then gone outside for a few hours. My 100% unscientific test tells me that the batteries do not like prolonged exposure to cold and start to degrade quicker as they stay colder longer even with recharge cycles.

I'm not sure what you mean by 30' weather...is that C or F, plus or minus?

But I agree with you about the cold. I've had my M9 out all day in -20C (-4F) weather and the only problem was fumbling with cold hands to get fresh batteries out of my pocket!

The M8 performed fantastically for me last winter when I was covering the two blizzards here in Philly. I had 2 spare batteries on me and was able to shoot for 10 hours at a time out in the cold. I spent about 55 hours out in the nasty weather with the M8 and it worked great. (I DID cover it up with plastic bags to keep the wet off)

Anyone tried those chemical pack handwarmers on an M8? I shot a snow removal project last night - 25 degrees f & dropping - and had to change batteries every half hour or so. Admitted, the batteries are 3+ years old, but that's not been a problem before.
