After looking at m8 specifications it seems it is actually slightly thinner and lighter than the m7, tough it doesn't look like it in the pics:

m8: 139 x 80 x 37mm 545g (without battery) or 591g (inc. battery)

m7: 138 x 79,5 x 38mm 610g (without battery)

What am I missing?

I posted this on other thread but received no comments.

Strangely, based on the published dimensions you aren't missing anything. Though according to everyone who's handled one and the comparison photos I've seen the M8 is indeed a couple mm thicker than the M7.

I agree, I don't get it either. Any picture I've seens suggests the camera is a bot of a porker, though they have mounted the lens proud of the front of the body a couple of mm to make space for the electronics/LCD/Sensor package. But for that, the body would have been thicker, but I don't believe the statistics tell the whole story.

I downloaded and printed Leica's new brochure .pdf, which has tri-views of all the M bodies to the same scale. Overlaid 'em.

The long dimension IS identical to within a mm, as the specs say. But front-to-back there is no question the printed specs are not real - either a typo, or Leica fudged the measurements (counted the M7's ISO dial in the depth but not the M8's screen and control wheel, or some such).

Since the M8 is STILL no thicker than the grippable part of a Nikon FM2 - I ain't worried by the actual size. But I do wonder who Leica thought they were/are fooling.

And I am curious about the weight - reviewers say a bit heavier than the M7 (610g), specs say a bit lighter. May just be psychological - human hand feel makes a lousy scale. Again- I doubt it wil be enough to notice without holding a camera in each hand.
