M8 M8.2 prices getting lower already

Prices are still the same at B&H. And they've already added the M9's.

I don't think the prices are officially going to be lowered. They'll likely stay where they are until supplies are exhausted.

As for the used market. Anyone letting their M8 go for under $3k is foolish. The camera will last a lifetime and will be 2nd only to the $7000 M9 for the next 3 years at minimum.

They'll be down for a few weeks as the early adopters desperately unload to get the M9. They'll be up again soon enough, before the slow inevitable downward arc.
But don't write off the M8 just yet. In a few weeks people will be on these fora saying stuff like 'my M8 gives me more film-like files than my M9...'

Then we'll see how it goes.

I think the M8 will hold its value until somebody else comes out with an alternative to the M9 or an entry-level dRF. The M9 will probably just increase the general interest in buying into or returning to an RF system (lenses) as people gain confidence in the long term viability of the system and the eventual appearance of lower priced models from other competitors (such as Zeiss, Cosina, etc...).

I'd expect old tele lenses above 50 to go up in price, while old version Noctilux prices decline a bit.

If the M9 solved the Infrared problem meaning you no longer require Hot Mirror Filters, expect the M8 and M8.2 prices to drop much more quickly.

the M9 will have a beneficial impact on used M lenses, especially the 50s and longer. the M8 will continue to depreciate, but how fast or far i can't say.

Well I guess those that don't have an M8 will continue writing-up the death of the camera in the hope that they can finally afford one. I'd say reports of its death are somewhat premature...

In the end, the market will decide - good old supply and demand - no matter what people write in these sorts of threads.

The only way used M8 prices will hold is if it can be made a cult camera - think RD-1. Otherwise it is going to now take the normal downward trajectory all old digital cameras take. It's not a "system viability" thing. The only system the M8 is a part of is Leica lenses. Nothing has changed there.

I think m8 prices will dip down to $1500 USD before settling down to around $2000. Of course, we shall see!

Streetprice is now around 1800€ in Belgium, second hand shops ask around 2200 to 2300€.
About the same price a very good MP goes for, for that kind of money I take the MP.

compromise - partially solved

compromise - partially solved

according to the M9 FAQ, IR filters are not needed anymore, and the glass hot filter over the M9 sensor rejects some IR, but not all.

IR filters can be used at lengths of 35mm and longer, but must be removed for shorter than 35mm.

Synthetic blacks may still show a magenta cast, as it does on some other pro level cameras.

Somewhere else I read that they were targeting being in the 1/3 of pro level cameras for ir rejection.

This may mean that the M8 will always be better for certain types of images, such as b/w, IR, moire heavy images, etc.

If the M9 solved the Infrared problem meaning you no longer require Hot Mirror Filters, expect the M8 and M8.2 prices to drop much more quickly.

In Germany prices steadily decrease, as expected. We'll see in the next few days how hard of a hit the used marked took with the introduction of the M9. But, recently there were M8's available used for less than 2000 Euros, which is really low here. In England they were below 2000 Euros for some time now.

What amazes me is that there doesn't seem that much of a difference in used prices between cameras with and without warranty and even with or without upgrades. It doesn't seem matter how old the camera is, either, it seems like the M8 hit some bottom (for now) close to the 2000 Euro mark.

Merely my observations.

How is the M8 not a system camera?
Do I have it wrong or is it true that....

The Pixel density of the Leica S2, M9, and M8/8.2 is exactly the same??

If this is true and the files are DNG...... The only true difference should be the in camera processing for selected lenses. I must admit I'm not the most tech savvy so please correct and enlighten these statements.

As a mostly Portrait shooter. I'm not desperate for the M9. Although I must admit the high ISO samples so far look very promising.

The same is true in the US and has been for a while. It is a mystery to me, especially given the M8's history.

I mostly agree with Damaso, in that I think prices will come down below $2000 before settling around $2000. I think once people pay off their M9 debts, some will want the smaller sensor for the tele effect, in the same way that Nikon full-frame shooters also own and use the D-300. I was going to write "Before that happens, though, expect to see a glut of used IR filters in the classifieds.", but I don't know what happens if you use an IR filter as a protective filter when there is built-in filtration in the camera. What happens if you have too much?
