Whoa..

Now.. I don't own an M8 but wouldn't it be prudent to verify what exactly this firmware does before installing it into the camera?

Not that the camera doesn't need or want a firmware upgrade but I have heard of firmware "upgrades" make cameras head south in the past.

i have a question about the upgrade situation?
HOW SAFE IS IT?
i ve heard before that someone try to upgrade the camera and it died for a short period of time and then it was workinf fine agaian.
my problem is does it worth it taking that risk?
i took a loan to by my camera and i am petrified in the idea that it will die .
i am still paying installments in the bank............

2.I seem to be able to get a quicker review of the image I just shot. Actually before the buffer empties i get to see the image on the LCD. Before, I always had to WAIT a long time, until the red light quit blinking.
3.And the ISO 640 images look very very good and almost no noise.
4.AWB, is too early to tell, but first several shots in mixed lighting (flourescent/daylight) look great.
5. I think the shutter sounds the same to me. Oh well......
I actually had a fellow photogrpaher compliment me on the shutter sound! He thought it sounded "rich". Ha!

Owning a Leica has made me both patient and appreciative of waiting for solutions to problems; however I must confess I am bitterly disappointed not to see the AWB issue addressed in this update. I'm starting to wonder if any potential fix will require an h/w upgrade or will possibly be left until the next revision of the camera. Either way, Leica: please release a statement to keep us informed of the situation!

Funny the release notes don't show these improvements?
Its not like a company to spend time working on improvements to hide their light under the bushel!

and as a really stupid question .. why does the upgrade go from 1.107 to 1.110 ..

There was probably a 1.108 and 1.109 during development that was kept internal and not released due to bugs or what not. It happens a lot in the computer software world.

Sounds like you had skipped one or two previous firmware upgrades. (??)

I've never seen noise on an ISO 640 shot, except in chronically underexposed shadows. Which is the same kind of behaviour I see on my Canon 5D.

The major improvement in AWB was a few versions back, including better color handling when not using UV/IR filters (and setting Lens Detection to "off")

I always have a fresh battery, don't touch the camera while updating, and use a reliable SD card.

Mine heads towards the Tropic of Cancer via the Gulf Stream, then takes a left turn on Albuquerque 😉 Wait, or is it right toin?

I did not bother. Used a brand new 4GB Transcend card and battery was whatever was left in the camera. Very disappointed that SDHC cannot be upgraded as it may be more HW than SW.

Guys, stock up on your 4GB SD cards.

I'm just saying that this has happened in the past to other manufacturers and it's not beyond (based on all the "features" that are present on the M8) Leica's capability to make a bit of a mistake which would require Firmware 1.111 or 1.12 to fix.

Maybe we should just all stay inside and be afraid.

It's a nice gesture to warn people to be cautious, but your advice conveys something similar to the above analogy. What do you want people to do if they heed your advice? Not upgrade?

You suggest finding out what the update does before upgrading. Well, updates fix things and companies make every effort not to break things while doing so. I seriously doubt that you will ever see, x. Renders the camera completely dead, as one of the items listed for an update, so the only option is to bite the bullet and hope for the best.

Also, the only way for M8 users to get any idea of whether an update is fine or not is for lots of people to update so that we have a decent amount of sample data. The user base is small enough as is so the more people that update, the better it is for users and Leica.
