M8 Ramblings

I have been following the M8 threads with interest even though I have little interest in buying one. At the moment I have little or no need for a digital RF regardless of the name on it and as I am likely to commission a new boat in the near future, I have few funds to spare.

I have, however, found some of the discussions interesting. I doubt any other camera would have caused as much traffic on the forum. It is obvious that some are very pro the camera, some seem to be disappointed and some are anti. I can understand and indeed respect all those views. Some are very passionate about expressing their views and others more analytical. IMHO, it is the diversity of views in this community that makes it such an interesting place. However, what I find less enjoyable is the amount of "bickering" that is going on at the moment.


So please, express your views on the M8 or any other camera, lens company or technique as strongly as you like (as long as you don't use profanity 😉 ). I will read them with interest, I may not always agree with them but I will respect them. At the same time, please refrain from discussing other members. You don't have to agree with their opinions but everyone has the same right to express their thoughts about photographic matters without their "character" being discussed.

I would far rather read posts than have to edit or delete them or be forced to lock threads. For some reason, the M8 has provoked far more "flames" than usual. Please stick to the matter in hand, remember Jorge's basic rules and make Joe's, Ralph's and my life a lot easier. 🙂

Can we please keep it civil. If you have an alternative point of view, feel free to express it. If you want to start a new thread and have some fun such as the Fed 8 thread, please do so.

On the other hand, please do not flame or troll in a thread just because you don't like it or aggree with it. Please, just leave it for the ones that do want to discuss the matter to enjoy.

As I said in post 1, you are perfectly at liberty to express your opinions on any photographic technique or item of piece of equipment with as much passion as you like. In your post here you say TO remove some of the opinions expressed about the techical problems the M8 is experiencing alters the context of the debate and effectively puts a sock in the mouths of those less inclined to offer our vote of confidence for a camera that has obvious flaws .
You seem to be suggesting that I removed your opinions on the technical merit of the M8 because in some way we are trying to protect the M8. This was not the case. The posts I removed did not contain such arguments but were flames in which you expressed your opinion of other members. If you wish to discuss the M8 in a reasoned manner, please do so. If you wish to conduct a flame war under the pretext of reasoned debate or "candour", please go elsewhere.

Our moderators, Kim Joe and Rover, do a great job of preventing our forum from deteriorating into the blood-sport gladiator pit of photo.net's leica forum.

We should do our best to support their efforts. As Kim says, all ideas are welcomed so long as they are expressed with civility. That is not too much to ask.

And what can be the polemical matter about the M8 if I may ask? The camera came, it was flawed, the company knew but since it's under financial pressure to compete, they still released it and now they have egg on their face.

Polemic matter? Hardly, to me.

Now, let it be known this is my first or second post about the M8... aprés le debacle. If it's considered inflammatory or aggressive and then removed... well, I won't say a thing because it's the moderators' prerrogative to edit or remove posts. In fact, it's the law of sites like this one. If we all can live with it, we'll be fine.
