M8 + Voiglander + UV/IR

Hi,

A few weeks a go I bought an M8 with 28mm Voigtlander Ultron.
When I registered at Leica I did receive two UV/IR filters which fits on the Voigtlander. These filters should function as a strong barier in the IR range, ensuring neutral color reproduction.
The manual of the filters says also that it should be used with coded Leica lenses (only?) and "Lens detection - On with UV/IR" selected from the main menu on the camera.
I was wondering if the filters could also be used on non coded (Voiglander) lenses. Does it makes any sense to use these filter om my Voigtlander?? Do I have to switch the lens detection on (On + UV / IR)?

On my 35mm Voigtlander I used the filter but switched lens detection off. Had no IR issue.

Niels, I have the same setup on my M8 (28 Ultron with UV/IR filter) and leave lens detection on with UV/IR all the time (since 2 of my other lenses are coded) and have had absolutely no issues.😀

I've been using my M8 with mostly 50mm lenses, with the UV/IR cut filters. I have lens detection/IR detection off. The in-camera JPEG results seem good to me.

Nikkor 5cm F2, Leitz M-Mount adapter, wide-open, UV/IR filter.

I'll have to try with the wide-angle lenses.

I have the f/1.9 Ultron, which is a screw mount lens. I use a 9cm Leitz bayonet adapter (the full-circle type, not with the cut-out section) which I milled-in slots and painted them to code it as a 28 Summicron. Without the coding the IR problem is indeed solved, but there's a little bit of cyan in the corners on some shots (with light colors in the corners it shows most). Coding the lens corrects it in-camera.

You use the filters to correct the IR issue. Using coded lenses is for vignette (dark corner) correction. Two different things 🙂

You can use filters with non-coded lenses.
You only really need to code lenses that are wider than 35mm.

You can also go filterless, (I do with the 15mm Heliar), but be prepared for the occasional magenta-color black in synthetics objects (usually fabric).

I'm Prepared. Nikon Coolpix 950 with IR absorbing glass removed, full visible+infrared scan.

This case is all-black in the Visible domain. Only one portion of the seemingly uniform fabric is an IR reflector. You just never know.
