Hi everyone,

First timer posting, I have a M8 and I want to purchase the legendary 21mm f/4.5. Is the cyan shift is still an issue ? If it is, how can I resolve it.

Any other issues ?

Thanks for all your inputs.

James,

I use the M8 and the ZM21/4.5 and the cyan shift can be an issue in some shots, but it's a quick fix for cornerfix. If you are careful/lucky to get a lens that brings up the correct frameline (28/90) it's possible that the lens could be coded to reduce the cyan shift. Great lens and I really like the FL on the M8.

IIRC the 4.5/21 has a 50/75 frame line, so the bajonett needs to be changed for one showing the 28/90 frame lines, if you want to code it as a Leica 21mm lens. And even then, I'm not sure if coding it as a 21 is successful for your matter. The bayonet of the 4.5/21 is reported to be not "user-changeable". Of course the color shift can be removed with Cornerfix (free software) and maybe with a specific setting in Lightroom 3.

Thanks CVickery, you have helped me to make the decision.

Just notice your profile, you are in my neighborhood, I am in Mississauga, it is nice to know another Canadian in this international forum.

James,

Nice to 'meet' you James.

You are correct Photon42, but IIRC the newer ZM21/4.5 do bring up the correct framelines as well as having a cut in the mount so coding won't wear off. Unfortunately I believe I've read that the coding for both the Leica Elmarit 21mm lenses tend to overcorrect a bit for the ZM21/4.5 so I'm content with using Cornerfix with my old version (the mount change would be a pain too). Perhaps the code for the new SUPER-ELMAR-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH will work better.

This applies mainly to the M8/8.2. The M9 is another matter, and one that I can't speak to.

I have used the 21 C-Biogon only on an M8, not M9 (where it's said not even CornerFix can fix it). This one has the 28/90 flange and was coded by John Milich to 011000 as a Leica 21 Elmarit ASPH. Works fine, no perceptible cyan corners, no need to use CornerFix from what I can see...
