For what it's worth, I spoke to Eric at Tamarkin today. He told me they expected their first batch of M8's on or about 11-15. Since I was on the list, I gave him the credit card info to lock in the purchase.
Of course, this is in his interest to say so, but he was at Photokina, spent some time with the camera, clearly is a Leica expert, and was very enthusiastic about it.
He also told me they were committed to continuing to make lenses that cross both film and digitial use, i.e. no DX lenses like Nikon's .

Hi Alan,
I did that same thing as you last week and Eric said the same. The Nov. 15th is when the units arrive by air freight, after which they go through customs and the to Leica USA, checked and packaged for shipment to dealers and then out to us. Eric does know his Leicas and the folks at Leica. I'll be talking to him later this week when I add a lens (28/28ASph) to my order.

More or less the same thing I heard from our rep out west in the Rockies 2 days ago - M8's inbound to Leica US during the first 2 weeks of Nov. and outbound to dealers middle of the month.
