M9 Announcement 21 09 09

And what if they come out with an M9 B&W sensor only? I would even be tempted to buy one if it came out. Think of it, no IR filter, no cyan drift, no Bayer pattern, no AA filter... everything simpler to make, high ISO much cleaner due to lack of filters, DR better, etc, etc... And it would really be a status symbol camera too...

Maybe Leica is going to show off all their new rebranded Panasonic stuff.

Naw, I hope its the M9 too....kind of....if it is I will be kicking myself for buying a EP1 and the girlfriend is bugging me to buy a car....

I heard something similar from Igor yesterday, though he had originally thought it would be in October in Seattle, he also heard 999, with it being full frame, 18 MP.

When he gets back from the saw bones, I will see if he has any further details.

Too early to hope for a Federal Bailout and stimulus check to trade in a clunker that only gets 36 shots to the roll? Probably more Leica dealers in the US?

Weird vibe for sure, broheim.
Not more than a couple/few months ago some of the more prominent leica fanboys were exclaiming, ‘it can’t be done!’, sighting ‘the laws of physics!’. Now these same individuals, with nothing more than a rumor and now an apparent announcement of some kind, have abandoned reason and intellect, or at least what passed for reason and intellect back in the day, in order to be on a WAITING list to buy the mythical beast; the rumored FFM9. Sure we still have the true skeptics among us, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’ crowd, but this whole scenario, leading up to the actual announcement, and the reactions of the various individuals on RFF has been very interesting indeed.
But why shouldn’t there be an uneasiness among the knowledgeable. After all, experience has taught us that Leica had a hell of a time with the release of the M8.
And now they’re releasing two digital cameras, The S2 & FFM9, both more technically advanced beyond all previous leica offerings.
What could possibly go wrong?
Leica S2, FFM9 and a (my guess) Leica badged Pani GF1. This is a formidable digital product line.
But does one need to abandon reason and intellect to believe that Leica can pull this off?

I hope it's the m9, and that its awesome. I'd love to see people dumping their m6's and other film bodies to afford an m9, and me selling a guitar or two to afford a new film body on the cheap.

If there is no M9 then they have been fools to let the rumors run wild as it has KILLED sales of the M8 and M8.2 as evidenced by the suddenly lower than ever prices new and used. Nearly 3 years on from the original M8 is a good long life in digital camera land.

I find it hard to believe too that a new M9 will be available in the shops, say, before Christmas. - Let's all hope that S2 will...

I'm sure it will me the M9, full-frame sensor.

Kodak has a 35mm equivalent sensor in their line-up, 16MPixels. I suspect they could respin it for Leica. I really hope this is the one, or at least close to it, as it is available in color and monochrome.

and i agree the rumors were managed, along with pre-orders.

Not sure if I will buy one, or a used M8/M8.2.

what Leica should do: offer a trade-in program on the M8/M8.2, and factory recondition them. Sell them with a warranty, as a lower-cost equivalent to the M9.

Hmm... This is really getting interesting!

I enjoy working with my M8, and has no need for an M9 really. However, if it comes out I will probably get one after a year or two!

What could be a real lift for Leica is getting a chip that could take on Canikon, and I know it would get a lot of attention if it is 16/18 Mpix.

Lets hope that low light capability is at least good enough, and that it still is an M in all other specifications.

And I would love to have the S mode disappear...

Electronic (CCD) shutter eh? Now THAT would be quiet. Sure to please the Leica Man(TM).

They used that on the original Canon 1D when it had a CCD sensor...

The 5D2 uses an electronic first (iirc) curtain in silent mode and mechanical second. Presumably the engineers are working on adding electronic second curtain to CMOS as well as first.

I think the M8.2 was just a stop-gap measure. It's really not much different from the M8. A few minor things upgraded, but nothing substantial. Probably things that were in the pipeline for the M8 anyway, at least as upgrades.

The "M9" would be a major redesign...

I agree. Changes like the frameline mask were a very necessary band-aid that they could make quickly and cheaply. There were an awful lot of very pissed off people out there in regards to that issue and this was an easy way to buy some good will.

The new shutter was probably being readied for the M9 anyway, so that's just a by product of the long term development cycle. The upgrade program and M8.2 sales probably already paid for the engineering work by now...
