M9 brochure up... or not

Did you miss the thing recently about the first Mac-only botnet being found in the wild? There's a reason why OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" now contains antivirus functions.

It should be clear that a fully protected windows system (recent patches, firewall, antivirus) is still more secure than an unprotected standard system of a lazy mac user.

But do people really buy a mac only because it is more secure?

I think the only cure for that would be a stronger involvment of a moderator who bans off topic. Do we want this?

Actually it has gone from "M9 brochure talk" via "I got a virus from said brochure" to "If you had a Mac, you'd be immune from viruses". It's not unusual that people sway from the topic a little after 200-+ postings 😉

Incidentally I prefer Coke Zero, I only use Diet Coke for removing gunk from Zorki top plates. 😛

Since the early 80s. Vulcanite is a pain to work with and there were some restrictions on the chemicals used IIRC.

I have seen badly retouched prints, but retouched 35mm negatives I have never seen.

There is no question about wich system is easier to manupulate or to falsify. Digital!

If you can get Lightroom 2 and CS3 running under Wine for me, I am all over that. I do all my internet stuff on Ubuntu, but photography needs Windows...for now!

JSU: the best solution for the 180mm Fov, the 135mm is usable with the M8.2. I use the 135 Tele-Elmar wide open on my M8.2 with the 1.4x VF magnifier and I am happier with this combination than the alternative of carrying yet another camera, a Nikon D3, with a 180/2.8. I have shot some slow, predictable moving subjects with the 135 on the M8.2 and I am happy with the results.

And, to make silver-gelatine prints from digital files is very difficult. From photography I want as a result a solid silver-gelatine print that will last many years. I do not think that digital files last a very long time, neither do prints from inkjet-printers.

Whoa! You need to try the new Harman Gloss FB AL Baryta paper! With the proper profile and printer this paper can produce some very nice silver print "look alikes". Archival paper too.

I agree that OS X is necessary for me to run certain programs I need for work and a few games, but otherwise I prefer a BSD distribution called OpenBSD for just about everything else --- so much more secure. Even Adobe itself uses OpenBSD for its servers!
Cool thing is that you can obtain it for free.

Skipping ahead a bunch of posts here, but...

- The appearance of the M9 ensures the existence of its film-based stablemates (MP & M7), and this is a Good Thing for all of us, film- and pixel-heads alike (and I use those terms with affection, folks).

- Leica will sell a whole heapin' lot of these (a lot more than the S2, which hopefully will do well within its rarified niche). I only recently got to try an M8, and liked it...reminded me a lot of my Hexar RFs, interestingly enough. 🙂

- I can't afford any of this, any time soon. But that's okay: The GF-1 is the prize I have my eye on, and will replace both my current digital cameras when I finally get my hands on one. All the digital I could really want right now.

So: praise Solms (and Tokyo), and pass the Ektar 100, please...

Under the pictures of the Black M 9 on page 22 and 30 of the brochures it states available in steel-grey paint and black paint. In the specs it says top deck and baseplate in brass,black or stel grey paint .So no Chrome M9

But the negative, without a print, is next to useless except as an archival remnant. To make use of it, you have to print it.

Even development of a negative has a lot of room for choice and judment. They don't come out of the camera fully developed.

Hi! Where's the allusion? Sorry that I may have missed it in my impatient reading.

I have been wondering whether the M9 could be a companion to my M8, but the filter thing looms large. Has the M9 obviated the need for the stupid UV/IR filters? How? Not sure what to hope for here.

Yes, the need for external IR filters is gone with the M9. They figured out how to place IR filtering behind the micro lenses rather than in front of them. I guess we'll have to wait to see how well this works in practice.
