M9 Broken LCD Screen

Aaahhh - I could jump off a bridge now! I'm travelling through southern Italy and dropped my M9 on the edge of wooden chair, and now the LCD screen is broken and 90% blacked out :bang: Luckily (I guess) I can still figure out the ISO at least because I can see when it is on "Auto", and then I can count to clicks to get to my desired ISO.

Anyway, has anyone gotten the LCD screen repaired in the US? Does anyone know how much it costs? I'm afraid to find out.

seems like now you have the perfect digital rangefinder for some!

joke apart, that must suck hard. hoping here that it's not too expensive (judging from how bad the M9 lCD is)...
 
how do you want to check your taken pictures then?

one of the advantages of digital photography is the possibility to check after you have just taken a picture. If you don't want to use it just stick a black piece of paper on top of it XD
 
Hah -- i have one more week in Italy to shoot. Maybe I'll love the mostly obstructed screen (figured out how to count to get the ISO settings changed and to move in between manual and auto white balance, which is all I really need) -- have been trying to 'chimp' less with my shooting too.

The thought of waiting months to get the camera back, plus the astronomical sum I'm sure they'll charge, is killing me, especially since I just picked up a pre-ASPH summilux (e46) that I'm in love with.

Maybe it's time to get an RX-1 and forget about this Leica sh**.
 
Commiserations. Maybe it's no more expensive than the M9-P upgrade and maybe not as expensive as that. The sympathy here is muted through horror and 'identification.' Well done on making the most of it.

Sort of. I love my M9 more than any other camera I've had or used.

But, repairing a Leica is triple the price, hassle and time of almost any other camera. For the LCD screen, they refuse to release parts to repair shops in the US, so now this is probably going to Germany for a few months at a $1,000+ cost. My wife's 5D had its LCD screen crap out and she was able to bring it to a repair center in NYC and have it fixed pretty quickly for a few hundred dollars.

It's not Leica's fault I broke the screen, but the hassle and expense of getting the camera fixed, lenses calibrated etc. will make my think twice about getting the newest M at some point.

[UPDATE: See post below. Experience with Leica in getting the camera fixed turned out to be pleasant, quick and less expensive than I had anticipated].

Just to show that the Internet's not only for complaining (; --

My experience getting the screen fixed with Leica US was great. They were very responsive and I had the camera back in a little over two weeks from when they started the repair. For some (fortunate) reason I was only charged for labor, and they also cleaned the sensor and took a look at the calibration, all for less than half of what I assumed I would have to pay.

All in all very happy.
 
Thank you for posting a positive response to Leica's service. On forums, we tend to hear all the negative things and it is refreshing that reality is can be positive.:angel:
