It depends entirely on the mood of the official working that day. It's the reason why I have yet to have my Leica's stiff rewind fixed. (it was stiff when we met up in Tokyo spring of 2015 - still haven't sent it in for fear of getting nailed on return)

Exactly. Picking it up from Japan is not a big problem for me though. I might just take one Friday off. Leica Kyoto has already received and I can expect to use M9 with brand new sensor in a month!

There's a standard international procedure for temporary imports and exports for repairs. In a nutshell, you fill in some forms and then pay import duty and tax on the cost of the repair and postage. With luck nothing...
