I am considering purchasing a Leica M9 with a Leica 50mm f2 Summicron-M Lens. I have a couple of questions relative to that and possible future lenses?

Q1 – Leica 50mm f1.4 Summilux-M Lens

Apart from the
  • Narrower depth of field at f1.4
  • Better low light performance
  • Larger size
Is there any other reason for purchasing a Leica 50mm f1.4 Summilux-M rather than the Leica 50mm f2 Summicron-M Lens?

Q2 – Leica 90mm f2 Summicron-M Lens

When using the Leica 1.4 x magnifier with the Leica 90mm f2 APO-Summicron-M lens – do you still see the lens in the viewfinder?

Q3 – Leica 28mm f2 Summicron-M Lens

I am considering this lens for ‘everyday’ use and landscapes. I figured that with the ‘cropping ability’ of the M9 it would prove more flexible than a 35mm whilst not requiring an external viewfinder – any thoughts on this lens?

Many thanks in advance!

Richard

Hi
I think it is difficult to answer this question until we see how individual lenses 'feel' on the M9.
I actually preferred the 50 f2 on my M8 to the aspherical 50 1.4 as the latter was just increadibly high contrast and almost too sharp for my tastes. It is very subjective. there is a less subjective difference in price which is considerable. But it might be different on the M9

I can not answer 2!

The 28 would certainly be better for landscapes
Personally id go for a 75 instead of a 90 but really really try these out on an M9 before buying.

Thank you!

Thank you very much for your reply and your advice - most helpful!

You are welcome
Incidentally the 28 2.8 is a brilliant lens and again very reasonably priced.
If you whent for the 50 F2 and the 28 2.8 you might also be able to afford (at least 2nd hand any way) the 35 f2. I would be very suprised if this was not really good on the M9.

Do report back your findings
