M9 & M8 for a wedding...

i just did a wedding with a single M8 with a 28mm elmarit and a voigtlander 75mm heliar classic. it locked up right after taking all the pictures of the bride getting her hair and makeup done. i freaked out and thought i might've lost the whole morning's work, but it ended up being ok.

note to self: backup body!

i probably wouldn't do another with just the M8

You should never do ANY wedding with just one body regardless of the brand! Geez... you need backup bodies, lenses, and flashes! I used to carry three bodies at weddings. I've experienced just about every kind of failure you can imagine, and you need to throw the offending gear back in your bag, grab another and keep shooting.

You can shoot a wedding with a M9 - check it out here: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2010/03/07/weddings-with-a-leica-m9-yep/

The key to success is taking shots that play to the Leica's strength. With some planning and patience it's certainly possible, but as the article suggests you may need to consider the wishes of the bridal party. If they are looking for "traditional shots" the Leica may not be the best choice. If they are looking for "photography", the article makes a strong case.

Notwithstanding how wonderful Leica is, the sharpness of the lenses, the wondrous color, the special "look" of the images, whether digital or film..
I personally think a Leica RFDR is actually too slow for a modern wedding. It's not the equipment but how people have changed! The world have all become ADD. No patience, no waiting, no hesitations..I done PJ in riots, mayhem and civil unrest. Ya gotta be faster at a modern wedding. One NEEDS auto focus, auto exposure, auto-flash and power reliability. Leica has none of these. I love my Leica system. I went Canon EOS when the weddings, engagements, family and other gatherings were part of my income. Using f0,95 lenses with no depth of field "may" entrance some subjects, but not seeing details and others, may kind of cloud the acceptance. One needs backup of spare body and in some cases spare lenses. Using Nikon and Leica a "no-no". Everything is the other way round, the bayonet mount, the focus directions, the placement of apertures etc.
Nikon has the better flash system. OK easier. I went Canon for those other reasons.
One of my favorite weddings ever was shot on Leica only.
A very favorable shoot but i was not the Prime photographer.
Using Hasselblad/Rollei,Mamiya in Medium Format does yield better quality but they are all slow, very heavy and the investment structure may not see a profit for a decade.
A Pro should please the client. Not some pixel peepers.
The site mentioned is indeed nice. I would for myself not to "struggle" getting images. There are enough other problems at a wedding.
I no longer do weddings. As one said the pressure and terror way too much..

I photograph with Leicas at weddings all the time. Anyone that says you can't is wrong. Learn what they can and can't do and you'll be just fine - just like with any other professional camera. I shot weddings with film Leicas and digital Leicas.

Wow, the Huff review of a wedding has some really bad photographs and extremely bad post processing.

For flash here is my usual set up.

Nikon sb900/600's on light stand with Pocketwizards and a Pocketwizard on a Leica.

Or -

Leica SF 20/24 with Nikon TTL cord on Leica

Lenses -

35/f2,50/f2,21mm and sometimes a 90/f2 but I find you can do just about everything with a 35 & 50. With the M8 I used to use the 21mm and 28mm quite a bit.

How about flash? Anyone have any experience attempting flash on the M for wedding? I was reading about using the SF24D with a Nikon or Nissin SC cable.
Or a SF58.

Are Nikon Speedlights compatible with an M9? This is an SB800 which I don't own. I do have an SB600 but not sure that is compatible.

Also read that a Olympus FL-36R is a good match for the M9... can anyone attest to this? Don't want to fry any electronics.

Pick up a Nikon SB-28 flash -- you should be able to find a good one for about $100 -- and use it on the Auto setting. The Leica hotshoe will trigger it with no need for a cord.

I have personally found this to be more accurate and reliable than TTL, even the so-called "advanced" versions of TTL. The SB-28 is powerful, yet relatively small and light-weight. It's a good match for a Leica, and even for my OM-D.

I've shot 300 weddings so far.

M8 + 28mm (the only perfect framelines in combination to its flawed viewfinder) makes it a useable set.
M9 + 50mm

But a good old Dslr is best. The Leica responsiveness is just so bad. That's my major gripe against leica digital cameras.
