M9 = M8?

I happened to be an unlucky owner of an M8. First it died on the second day and then had the line through every image when it came back from getting repaired.
Is this the first sign that the M9 is going to share that same legacy?

Hope not, but this for sure puts my thought on taking another dip in the Digital M waters. I'd stick to film with a new MP ... but while I don't mind scanning, it seems that every few years more scanners disapear - and that makes me really want a digital ranger-finder instead.

I passed on the M8 completely, but I'm interested in the M9. However I'm going to wait for quite a while for it to become stable so I'm in no rush to early adopt. Was in my local dealer yesterday and tried out an M9. Definitely nice. 🙂

My dealer advised me to wait for the M9.2 as I did with the M8.2. The M9.2 is expected to come very soon, about March or April next year, just to overcome child' s diseases (and mexican flu-🙂

The M9 may be the first real digital that I am interested in but as said above waiting can not hurt if bugs need to be worked out. The nice thing about this new camera is that it will take all the old M mount lenses without coding which will be a big savings. The question now arises will it also take Zeiss & Voigtlander? If so, a real major bonus.

I hope Leica seriously thinks about allowing in-menu lens selection
in the M8 in a future firmware upgrade.

Even if there were to be a few here and there with some issues (what camera does not have any?) I'd be tempted, just as with the M8 - but it sure would be a comfort if there was a known policy - sort of a Lemon law if you will - which let me as a customer know that for example if the problem goes out for a fix twice or three times ... then you get a new one instead of more away time. I think some kind of thing like that would minimize any bumps nicely and give a boost of confidence to those who really want one, but are stretching all their pennies ... but worried a bit. (like me 😀)

The Nikon Coolscans.
Using a digital camera+macro lens+light box can produce very good results but not at the level of a dedicated film scanner. If it's sufficient depends on what you demand in terms of quality.

Those of you who did not buy a M8 saved yourself a lot of agony. Nor would I trust a 2.hand M8 that has not been to Solms for fixing the Red Line. Even M8.2s has been to Solms for this. Then there is this filter thing and all that.

It took me more than a year to get the camera & software working properly. - But now it is working! I am not in the mood for changing right now. I don't want to be a beta tester this time. My first opportunity to buy a M9 will be next time I go to Singapore. Hopefully in March/April next year. If i pick up any bad signals regarding reliability of the M9 I will refrain from buying it. Then I will sit it out until Leica has come up with a fix. Which means that I will not buy a M9 before in 2011.

In UK law if the same problem recurrs a number of times the item can be deemed "not fit for purpose" and a refund is obtainable.

Hi Olsen - I see you are peddling this same rubbish about "not trusting a used M8 that has not been to Solms to fix the red line" over here just like on the other Leica forum.
Frankly, because the red line can happen to any sensor - even your replacement sensor or an M9 sensor - then the trip to Solms will probably be seen as a minus by anyone buying a used unit.

Still - good to see you are trying to spread this idea that trips to Solms are a very good thing for used M8s. Mine was back to get the viewfinder perfectly aligned for my Noctilux. That must add a few $$ to its value eh? 😎
