M9 P won't recognize new memory card

Decided to join the 21st Century and bought a 64gb SanDisk class 4 card to replace a pocketful of 4gb cards--mostly SanDixk Extremes. Never a problem. The new card brings up this warning: "Attention No SD Card." Called Miami Leica Dealership (where I just ordered a sf 26 flash to replace my lunker Metz) to get their view on the card issue. Person answering suggested problem could be that the M9 doesn't like the class 4. Ever hear of that?

Anyway, I ordered a 32gb Transcend class 10--not here yet. But I'd like to know your theories (or even facts) on what's going on.

Never happened to me, but then I never had a SSD that was DOA until a couple of months ago. Worth checking if you can.

I'm hard pressed to think that M9 would work with a Class 10 and not a Class 4.

Hard to find anything definitive. If someone is using a 64 gb on an M9, that would settle one part of the question. But could be that the class 4 instead of class 10 is the issue as the guy on the phone thought (I can't figure why that might be). Any more ideas? Or could be a bad card.

I have a 16GB class 10 SanDisk card never had an issue... I have a feeling 64GB is probably too much for the M9 to read... I do have a 32GB card never used it in the M9 though..

I'm pretty sure that your Sandisk 64Gb card is a SDXC. It was my understanding that the M9-P only takes up to a SDHC.

That's it. I use 16GB cards with "SDHC" on it (class 10). Just put in one of my new 64GB class 10 "SDXC" cards that I use for another camera and the M9 is not able to recognize it.

I and others have had issues with SanDisk Cards, especially the 8G Extreme. I and others do not use SanDisk in the M9 or original Monochrom.

Meanwhile, there was a strong contention at one point that Class 4 cards might be better because of the slow M9 reading of the card. Didn't make much sense. I've used Class 4 cards without a problem, however. My main cards are Lexars up to 16GB. No problem with them. I have a 16G Transcend Class 10 that's been no problem either.

Every now and then my M9-P will tell me there's no card. I turn off the camera, remove and replace the same card and usually the camera sees it again without further problems.

Electronic devices supposedly work on just 1s and 0s. Whether it's a computer or a camera I find they have a soul that needs to be respected. I treat my cameras like my cat. It helps.

All sdhc with no problems. Panasonic writes quicker than the others. I've had a few freezes but only when I've deleted files in camera, removed and read files on my computer then replaced card or i've viewed files while the camera is writing them.

I found the fastest to be 8gb transcend class 6, faster than a transcend 16gb class 10. Normally now just use lexar 16gb or 8gb. Always reckoned newer cards made no difference to the m9.

I tried to use a Sandisk Extreme 64GB SDXC card with my Leica M-E and got the same result: "No SD Card''. No problems with a faster 32GB SDHC card.

Can you format the card in the camera?

When I google the camera it says 32 gig. max.

64gb cards are too big for the M9. Anyway, with large cards you are asking for trouble. Eventually there will be a read/write error. Be safe and use smaller cards.

I just checked my Canon Full frame sensor camera and it shows capacity of 487 files in RAW format with an 8 gig CF card. 16 gig will work but, like the previous post, I don't want to put all my eggs in a single basket.

When I first started with digital I used 256k cards! Kinda like 5 and one quarter floppies!

Thanks one and all. The 32 gb, SDHC class 10 card arrived and works just fine. 1700+ shots remaining. Humbling to discover another aspect of photography about which I know next to nothing. In this case--memory cards--basic stuff. Just pull out whichever I can find.

The Wikipedia entry on cards quickly exceeds my brain's reading capacity or interest, but turns out that the HDXC (extended capacity) available since 2009 is supported (and useful) for fewer applications--apparently video and super high capacity and demand. Applications assigned to class ratings are all in terms of video demand so seems like a class 10 would be only marginally faster than 4, or 6 in an M9.

The new card cost $9.95. Wish I could recall the prices and capacity of cf cards I used in my Coolpix 990.
