M9 sensor discontinued

Raid - if you do an eBay search for "Leica M10 case" in order of "Price + Shipping: lowest to highest" you'll get some surprising results before you scroll down far enough to see the $190 Luigi case.

Thanks for the tip, Bill. The less costly cases are sold by unknown sellers. How can we tell how good the fit is and how good the leather is? Luigi is well known for his work.

But how long will it be before they discontinue the M10 sensor?

You did keep your M9, didn't you, Raid?

I have my M9, and I'm not happy about this.

There isn't much we can do about it, Rob. I think that the 41MP sensor is not for everyone, and that Leica will not dump cameras based on smaller sized sensors.

I was searching online for some half cases, and I noticed the huge price differences between half cases for Leica models. It seems that older models are less "needy" of expensive leather half cases than say an M10.

Pretty soon those half cases would be worth more than the cameras.

:D

The cost of the new sensor and repair was very close to buying a recently repaired M9 used. If you really love this camera, it might be your best route.

I find it funny though that a camera with such a bad issue is the only one people are complaining about that they won't be able to keep it going forever while many other more reliable bodies have been long forgotten about.

Everybody has to move forward ... no surprises.

Indeed. Nothing really sad about this. There are loads of M9 variants with new sensors for sale if you want one. Leica Wetzlar was and perhaps still is selling ala carte refurbished M9s. It's been 11 years since introduction, working off a 15 year old sensor design & chipset. Pretty impressive run.

Like Raid says, time to move on.

This, the former Kodak CCD production facility, was afaik, the world’s last producer of CCD sensors larger enough to be used in APS-C or full frame cameras.
Leica certainly never had the capacity to produce sensors, so they were at the mercy of those that did. . People have in the past assumed that these were Kodak CCD sensors, the “look” coming out of the camera appeared so.
The almost simultaneous dates of ON Semiconductor ceasing production and Leica’s announcement of not having any more sensors would seem to point that direction.
You can still get a Fujifilm S5 Pro, and those one of a kind Super CCD sensors have never been plagued with rot problems. :)

Well, I’m sure they meant well, but that’s like saying a personal computer is a lifelong companion.
