Well, I’m sure they meant well, but that’s like saying a personal computer is a lifelong companion.
Yeah, pretty much. Seems like people with that much money to drop on a camera would be past the point of believing in ad copy, but no.
When they said “lifetime” they were addressing the 80 year olds who make up their customer base.
Hope springs eternal.

This, the former Kodak CCD production facility, was afaik, the world’s last producer of CCD sensors larger enough to be used in APS-C or full frame cameras.
Leica certainly never had the capacity to produce sensors, so they were at the mercy of those that did. . People have in the past assumed that these were Kodak CCD sensors, the “look” coming out of the camera appeared so.
The almost simultaneous dates of ON Semiconductor ceasing production and Leica’s announcement of not having any more sensors would seem to point that direction.
You can still get a Fujifilm S5 Pro, and those one of a kind Super CCD sensors have never been plagued with rot problems.![]()
It all comes back to the issue of using a camera with CCD sensor or not. Is it really proven that it is a much better sensor somehow than the CMOS sensor or not?

Sad to hear it.
Bought my m9 used, had the sensor replacement and will use it till it dies.
So it goes. Like a really good film getting discontinued.

I suppose it all depends on one’s interpretation of the situation. Surely many of you remember that sales sensation back in the 1970’s known as the “Pet Rock”. That certainly qualified as a lifelong companion. Please allow me to introduce you to the Pet Leica.

I have been quite satisfied with using an M8 and M9, but since about a year I have been thinking of adding a more modern camera to eventually replace the M8 and/or M9 when they die and are not easily repaired. This is why I bought an M10 recently. With COVID-19 around us, I did not need another camera really.

My own thinking is similar. I don't seem to need a camera that does anything more than my M9, or even my D700, can do. And as long as the pandemic continues, I don't photograph much of anything unless it's in my back yard.

The end of digital Kodachrome.

Like the gods and goddesses of the past..
The M8/9 can be put in a glass cabinet ..
And worshiped from there..lol..
After the sensor dies that is..

I wonder if this could be an "implied warranty."
It was either deliberately misleading or wilfully stupid .

Well Leica did it a second time when they said the replacement sensor would have a lifetime warranty etc.

Typical Leica, 80 years in the camera business and they still can't get it right.

“ There are no laws or penalties from the Federal Trade Commission for the misuse of the term “lifetime.””
Never have been. Not in EU either. It’s always been an ambiguous term, legally, when used in product advertising, but it’s never been legally defined as referring to your lifetime, but more generally assumed to mean what the manufacturer thinks the lifetime of the product might be.
https://www.angieslist.com/articles/what-does-lifetime-warranty-guarantee.htm
In fairness to Leica, they might have assumed that there would be a longer available source of CCD sensors, though why anyone in industry would believe this is beyond me.
Gotta go, guy just delivered that thing that is going to rid me of “stubborn belly fat, forever!” Because I believe ad copy.

You're loading it incorrectly. Just extend the film leader into the center of the spool and then close the back.
Then wind on. It automatically takes it up - super easy.
Oh wait, you mean film cameras rock! Yep!

I'm still mad that those x-ray specs that let you see through anything that I bought from an ad on the back cover of a comic book don't work.

I still recall how they tried to brazen it out for weeks when the corrosion issue became apparent claiming it was due to excessive sensor cleaning .
Not their finest hour .
