It's not about the 'M' experience, that's a Beautiful thing !
I actually tried an SL recently ... tres cool, loved the weight, the VF

It's more about the Politics of a Company, the Customer Service, the turn around time when things go wrong

I absolutely agree with you Helen.
To me the M8 at $5500 in '06 ($7k today) & the M9 at $7.9K were way beyond what i'd consider spending on what have become disposable cameras. Change computers every few years for $1k..sure.
That's why i think film M cameras are worthwhile & sought after.
 
I think the "installed base" of any Leica cameras (especially digital M) is very small. Otherwise I can imagine some intrepid hackers coming up with a solution for this problem—from alternate salvaged sensors to even emptying the body of electronics and inserting a film mechanism.

Sadly I think it's unlikely given that people on eBay will still be trying to sell an M8 for $2000 ten years from now because of the red dot.

Then they said it was a 2% failure rate.

That was backed by poster on RFF that said he had inside knowledge from Leica.
He no longer posts here.


But... I honestly think the M240 is the best deal in digital photography if you buy one used.
They are rock solid, and you can get a digicam that works PERFECTLY with all M lenses. Plus it is a rangefinder. For $2000.

Outside film Leicas, it is the only one I recommend. The M10 may be as good from a reliability standpoint, but I'd only buy one of those used seeing they lose 50% of their value the moment you sign your credit card receipt.

Just checked eBay (I've no experience with digital Leicas)—10 M240 cameras for sale between $2899-4529 plus shipping and taxes. :eek:

The problem with the M240 family is an incredibly outdated digital visoflex, its just horrible, designed for an Olympus originally!

The greatly improved M10 digital visoflex is a huge improvement at officially mediocre.

That said, the M10 / P are big improvements over the M240 and incredible used bargains now the M10R has arrived.

Sure but Leica can’t survive on that alone anymore. However, they should always make a film M even if they don’t make money on it. It’s really their legacy. Imagine Leica without an M for sale?
 
Yes, of course this is a business and it needs to make a profit. Else, Leica will fall apart as a company. I carry in the same camera bag my M3 with M8 and M9. It is a friendly coexistence!
 
It’s a life time partnership, the life of the camera. ;)

However for me I’m really glad I purchased a ME in 2012. I’ve got 8 really good years out of the camera and with it’s replaced sensor I think it’s got a bunch of years left in its life.

My take on it all. M8 & 10 go out in the humid summer. M9 is in a sealed plastic bag with desiccant inside for the summer. I do not and never have wet cleaned sensor. If I were to replace it, Fijifilm x-pro 3 is $1800. Leica lenses can be adapted. Always a SL2 + adapter .

Lets see now, coffee stain on M8, corroded sensors on 9.
Luxury goods should be repairable or they go out of business.

I have a complete Nikon collection.
 
Ronald: this sounds very complicated and no fun to me.
Living at the Gulf of Mexico guarantees high humidity levels most of the year. My M8, M9, and M10 would be in sealed plastic bags with desiccant if I were to follow your approach.
It would be less costly just getting a photo of each camera and then looking at them.
 
when my M9's sensor started pickling they offered me a repair or the upgrade path. At first I was super sure I wanted to stick with my M9 but I then went with the 262. I have no regrets, even tho my M9 looked much more beautiful!

Unfortunately for a lot of us long time users I did expect the camera would last longer than 7 or 8 years. Every sensor in every camera was bad. For us that bought an M9 expecting decades of use and then being told I'd have to pay a large sum to make it work I wasn't happy. On top of that they admitted every sensor was bad but they wouldn't replace it until it failed. So while mine was under warranty they would not fix it until the sensor failed a year later (when the camera was out of warranty). My M9 is my last digital Leica. Leica is simply to small a player to cover manufacturing defects.
