I love the soft shutter release option on the M9. It feels more responsive and ready to shoot. Who else uses soft?

PS: For those who use discreet mode, you can vote standard, or vote soft if you use discreet & soft.

I use both, depending on the situation.

- Normally I use standard as it is easier to half-press the shutter release and hold a setting while reframing.

- When the subject matter is moving (as in photographing people at a party), I switch to soft as it is faster operating.

I haven't yet found a need to use the discreet shutter release setting.

Standard, like others, for the exposure lock, which is especially important when working with 28mm lenses, which I like. I only occasionally use discrete mode, in situations when being quiet is paramount.

Just a guess, 28mm is as wide as I go, and I find that I often need to: focus, meter, lock, recompose, simply because it's wider.

I actually dont have a digital M yet, just one on loan from a dealer that I've shot for 2 weeks now. Coming from a M6ttl I find the shutter button to be a pain in the ass. thats why I rather use a lightmeter or a testshot to test exposure than locking it because the stop before releasing often gives me 1 stop less speed to handhold. I can handhold 1/15th of a second with M6 but only 1/45th and sometimes 1/30th with the M9 (reference is a 50mm lens on each)

thats why the first thing if I get a digital leica is to put it to soft permanently... I dont use the automatic often anyway (and I dont trust it)
